Canova Gang, Larchwood Diamonds advance to quarterfinals with tourney victories

MITCHELL — The Canova Gang took advantage of a four-run seventh inning to down the Clark Traders 8-4 in the second round of the state Class B amateur baseball tournament on Tuesday.

The two teams were tied 4-4 before Canova plated four runs in the top of the seventh, scoring on a single by Cole Gassman, a two-run single by Jared Miller and a wild pitch.

Gassman finished with three hits and Jared and Derek Miller and Gavin Gassman each added two. Derek Miller drove in three runs. Trey Krier earned the win on the mound.

The Traders, who ended their season with an 11-7 record, received two-hit efforts from Wesley Jones, Bryce DesLauriers, Jess Karber and Jay Huber. David Novak smacked a double. Hudson Fuller started and took the loss.

In Tuesday's late game, Isaac Horigan fired a no-hitter to lead the Larchwood (Iowa) Diamonds to a 13-0 seven-inning win over the Crofton (Neb.) Bluejays.

Horigan walked only one batter and struck out eight. Micah Linn tripled and homer to highlight an eight-run third inning for the Diamonds. He had three hits and four RBIs. Gavin Lorenzen singled twice and also drove in two runs. Mitch Peschon clubbed a pair of doubles.

Canova and Larchwood will meet at 5:30 p.m., Friday in the tourney quarterfinals.

The tourney started Aug. 2 and continues through Sunday.

Legion All-Star Games

ALEXANDRIA — Team Red and Team Black traded victories in the South Dakota Baseball Coaches Association's South Dakota American Legion Baseball All-Star Games on Monday.

Red won the opener 15-4 and Black took the nightcap, 9-7.

In the first game, Mitchell Larson of Clark-Willow Lake homered for Team Red, which got three runs batted in from Sam Hand of Stanley County and two from Aiden Boechler of Dell Rapids and Dawson Hoffman of Platte. Area players Drew Salfrank of Aberdeen and Trey Huber of Clark-Willow Lake each pitched in the game.

Jack Neises of Salem-Montrose-Canova collected two hits and Brady Bierema of Tabor tripled and drove in two runs for Team Black. Peyton Osborn of Redfield was one the pitchers who threw in the game for Team Black.

In the second, Camden Osborn of Redfield smacked a double and plated three runs for Team Black. Hunter Geary of Elk-Point Jefferson drove in two runs. Owen and Peyton Osborn of Redfield each pitched in the game with Peyton getting the save. The Osborns are triplets.

Huber doubled and drove in two runs for Team Red. Lucas Kannegieter of Clark-Willow Lake stole two bases. Area players Keaton Rohlfs and Nolan Gall of Redfield and Casey Vining of Aberdeen all pitched in the game.
