Canisteo-Greenwood joins short list of Section V Flag Football champions

The Canisteo-Greenwood flag football team has been almost unbeatable this season and is the No. 1 team in Section V Class B.

Now, there is a chance for Canisteo-Greenwood to become the best flag football team in Section V.

Canisteo-Greenwood defeated Batavia 20-0 Saturday in the flag football Class B tournament final, becoming one of the first two sectional champions in the history of Section V high school sports.

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association, including Section V, is excited about flag football's potential impact on high school girls sports and would love to help grow its popularity.

This is the second season of flag football in Section V, the first when team champions are crowned.

Canisteo-Greenwood's ninth win in 10 games sets up a matchup with Section V Class A champion Penfield.

The Batavia Devils, the tournament's No. 1 seed who were undefeated before the final, finished with an 8-1 overall record.

Lillian Mullen, Canisteo-Greenwood quarterback: A junior, she threw three touchdown passes and made an accurate throw on a successful two-point conversion play. She also intercepted a pass on the final play of the first half as an active and noticeable player in her team's defense.

Batavia faced fourth down-and-goal at the Canisteo-Greenwood 17-yard line and was behind 14-0 with 12:22 remaining in the second half. A pass by Julia Clark was tipped and fell to the turf short of the end zone.

Matchup of champions. Canisteo-Greenwood faces Section V Class A champion Penfield, 11 a.m. Sunday at Monroe Community College. The winner advances to a regional game against the overall Section VI champion from the Buffalo region.
