Caney Valley, Kansas basketball teams end seasons with playoff losses Monday

Just over the Oklahoma state line, the Caney Valley, Kansas boys and girls basketball seasons both came to an end with losses in the Class 3A Sub-State playoffs hosted by the Caney Valley Bullpups.

On Monday, the Bullpups fell to Galena 55-42 after a slow start in the first quarter, scoring only 9 points with missed shots and several turnovers. However, the Bullpups in front of a packed hometown crowd went into halftime down by only 5 points with Galena leading 27-22.

“We started off pretty timidly and we weren't executing our man offenses well at all,” said Bullpups Head Coach Matt Washburn. “But our kids always play hard and they always fight to the end, but sometimes that just isn’t enough.”

Out of the locker room, the Bullpups kept it even at 11 points in the third quarter, but Galena outscored them by 8 points in the final quarter.

Colt Hightower led the Bullpups in scoring with 13 points, followed by Kale Owen with 7 points. Traxcyn Garton and Ben Matthews each scored 6 points.

The Bullpups (9-12) graduate only one senior this season, Jackson Griffin.

“I’m sad to see Jackson graduate,” said Coach Matt Washburn. “He’s is a great young man who did a lot of positive things on and off the court for our team.”

On the girl’s side, the Lady Bullpups fell to Riverton 47-30 on Tuesday. At halftime, Caney Valley KS led by one point, but couldn’t come back after Riverton scored 18 points in the third quarter.

“It was a tough one and we could not find a way to score down the stretch,” said Lady Bullpup Head Coach Emily Washburn. “They hit some big shots and played well. I am so proud of the improvements we made this season.”

High scorers for the Lady Bullpups included Anna Washburn and Myra Denny, both with 10 points.

The Lady Bullpups will be graduating two seniors, Anna Washburn and Kimberly Owens. Anna Washburn averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds a game. Owens averaged 8 points a game.

“These two girls showed up and worked hard every day and I am so proud of them,” said Coach Emily Washburn.

The Lady Bullpups ended their season at 10-11. Caney, Kansas will continue to host the playoffs through Saturday.
