Caney Valley boys beat Morris, Bartlesville teams fall: See area hoops action roundup here

Bartlesville High School’s girls basketball team continues to sharpen its competitive edge as it claws up the rugged mountain of progress.

On Tuesday, the Lady Bruins gave themselves a chance late to pull past host Enid High. But, an Enid player knocked down two free throws in the final 10 seconds to help her team cling to a 49-45 victory.

In the boys’ game, meanwhile, Bartlesville played Enid even for more than a half. But, Enid caught a gust of momentum on its way to a deceptive-looking 26-point win, 71-45.

The Bartlesville teams are slated to be back in action next Tuesday in their final home game of December.

In another area game, Caney Valley improved to 4-1 with a 57-51 win against Morris in boys action. Morris drained 25 points in the fourth quarter to make it close.

Following are summaries of these games and a brief look at other results from Tuesday.

GIRLS: Enid 49, Bartlesville 45 — Adrienne Flick and Aliyah Lunn displayed hot shooting hands early to help Bartlesville trail by only two at the end of the first quarter, 14-12. Mikka Chambers and Cassie Sneed both spearheaded the offensive attack in the second half. Chambers scored a flurry of late points to get Bartlesville within two points, 43-45. But, Enid dug in and held Bartlesville to just two points the final minute. The Lady Bruins are 2-3 on the season and 1-3 in district games.

BOYS: Enid 71, Bartlesville 45 — Riley Duong continued his torrid scoring for Bartlesville  to finish with 22 points. Grant Clark continued three treys and Jakob Veit rounded out Bartlesville’s top three scorers. Trae Collins pumped in a trey. Bartlesville led by seven early and trailed by only four at halftime. Enid owned a five-point lead late in the third period before it went on a fiery run. Bartlesville is 1-3 for the year and 0-4 in district.

BOYS: Caney Valley 56, Morris 51 — Led on the scoring end by Mav Condry and Logan Fowler, the Trojans put the squeeze on Morris. Through three quarters, Caney Valley led, 41-26. But, Morris scorched the nets for 25 points in the fourth quarter, opening up with a 24-9 run to tie the score, 50-50. Rocky Hester nailed a bucket and the Trojans hit four free throws in the final 30 seconds to improve to 4-1. For Morris, one player nailed three treys in the fourth period and the team’s best player reached 26 points. Caney Valley’s scorers included Condry, 14; Fowler 13; Tate Longan, Logan Horseman and Hester with nine apiece; and Cooper Fogle with two. Next up, Caney Valley plays Friday at Oklahoma Union. Said Caney Valley head coach Tug Brinker: “They full-court manned us the whole game. We turned it over numerous times in the fourth quarter. … The first three quarters I have no complaints. We hit our shots and our defense did a really good job.

GIRLS: Morris 34, Caney Valley 30: Caney Valley (1-4) saw its losing streak extended to four straight, including three single-digit losses in a row. The Lady Trojans will be focused Friday on getting back into a winning frame of mind when they travel to Oklahoma Union (0-6).

OTHERS: Wesleyan Christian boys downed Copan, 87-33. WCS improved to 5-1 while Copan (8-2) saw its four-game winning streak snapped. … Copan girls scrapped to a 41-36 win against Wesleyan Christian to improve to 3-6 on the season and 2-1 in the last three games. Wesleyan Christian fell to 0-6.
