Canelo Alvarez No. 5 on Forbes’ list of highest paid athletes for 2023

Canelo might be slipping as a boxer but he evidently has retained his earning power.

The Mexican star ranked No. 5 on Forbes’ list of highest paid athletes of 2023, with earnings of $110 million between May 1 2022 and the same date this year.

All but $10 million of that figure was generated in fight purses. Alvarez fought Dmitry Bivol on May 7 of last year and Gennadiy Golvokin last Sept. 17.

Alvarez was No. 8 on last year’s list, with $90 million.

No other boxer made the Top 10 this year.

The Top 10 list is as follows:

  1. Cristiano Ronaldo (soccer), $136 million

  2. Lionel Messi (soccer), $130 million

  3. Kylian Mbappe (soccer), $120 million

  4. LeBron James (basketball), $119.5 million

  5. Canelo Alvarez (boxing), $110 million

  6. Dustin Johnson (golf), $107 million

  7. Phil Mickelson (golf), $106 million

  8. Stephen Curry (basketball), $100.4 million

  9. Roger Federer (tennis), $95.1 million

  10. Kevin Durant (basketball), $89.1 million

Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOS) is scheduled to defend his undisputed 168-pound championship against John Ryder (32-5, 18 KOs) on pay-per-view Saturday near Alvarez’s hometown of Guadalajara.

He lost a unanimous decision to Bivol but bounced back to outpoint Golovkin in their third fight
