Sometimes things have a way of working out, aligning for a truly storybook moment.

That must have been what Brian Boyle felt like on Monday night. The New Jersey Devils center had his first career hat trick against the Pittsburgh Penguins which would’ve likely been memorable in its own right.

But Monday was also Hockey Fights Cancer night and Boyle was diagnosed with leukemia last year.

Cancer diagnosis

Boyle had signed with the Devils in 2017 and the cancer diagnosis followed shortly after when he began complaining of fatigue.

“I was feeling really tired and slowed down and mentally feeling like I just didn’t care much for anything at that point, because I was just so exhausted,” he said in an interview with People magazine.

What he originally thought was Lyme disease turned out to be leukemia.

Treatment began for what Boyle called a “chronic form of leukemia” as he continued suiting up for the Devils. Boyle played 69 games while undergoing treatment last season and officially got a clean bill of health last month.

“A test (BCR-ABL1) looks for the leukemia cells in your blood and when I was first diagnosed, it was at 75 percent,” Boyle told NHL.com. “The results showed all zeros on Monday. It’s full molecular remission, and I feel really good. The game plan has been working well, and now I’m just going to continue with it.”
