Here’s how Calvary Baptist chose to recognize Tiffany Wood for her milestone victory

The Calvary softball team enjoys doing things in a big way and that was never more evident than at Monday’s game with Alexandria when the program opted to celebrate coach Tiffany Wood’s win No. 300.

The momentous victory actually came about a week ago on the road when the Lady Cavs routed Franklin Parish 15-0 on a Saturday afternoon. Although a “300-win” flag was displayed following that game in Monroe, the decision to formally recognize the milestone was moved to Monday’s home game, a 12-0 blitz by the Lady Cavs (12-0).

As Wood sat in a chair in the pitcher’s circle surrounded by her athletes, her accomplishments were read over the public address system. That was followed by a presentation of yellow roses and a fireworks display usually reserved for football pregame ceremonies. And that was followed by free hamburgers, hotdogs and soft drinks for everyone who stayed for the celebration.

Two seniors, Arkansas signee Ramsey “Rambo” Walker and the dynamic DJ Lynch, have started for the varsity since they were in middle school witnessing the vast majority of the 300 wins.

“I’ve been playing since the seventh grade so I’ve been through all the ups and downs and the adversity that hits us, so it’s really cool to see her succeed and the way this program is going,” said Walker, who has hit in the neighborhood of 80 home runs in her portion of the wins.

Lynch, who could play at the Division I level but has opted to end her playing days at the culmination of the season, said it means a lot to play for Wood for six seasons.

“It makes me emotional at times because she’s had such a big part in my softball journey,” Lynch said. “I couldn’t imagine doing it under anyone else because she’s like a mom to us.”

After 13 seasons, all at Calvary, Wood has piled up five LHSAA state softball titles and her Lady Cavs are the defending Select Division III state champions. The 2024 team is No. 1 in the power ratings and stacked with power hitters throughout along with two of the best pitchers in North Louisiana.

Wood has been blessed with a plethora of college level talent during her tenure on Linwood Avenue and she gets plenty of support from her father, assistant coach Greg Frazier, and the Calvary administration. Calvary superintendent Chad McDowell was at Monday’s game videoing significant plays and pouring water on the head of Walker at the end of the game.

“I’m thankful to be at one place for 13 years and it means a lot that my softball family celebrates with me,” Wood said. “I’m appreciative of all the players I’ve been able to coach.”
