Calum Scott makes cut, Texas Tech men's golf finishes 17th at NCAA championships

Texas Tech golfer Calum Scott advanced to the fourth round at the NCAA championships, shooting 4-under-par 68 Sunday in Carlsbad, California, and making the 54-hole cut.

Scott aced the 245-yard No. 12 at the Omni La Costa North Course. The junior from Scotland stumbled with a double bogey at the par-4 15th, but birdied the par-5 18th to finish 54 holes in a group at 2-over.

The NCAA championships began with 30 teams, which after Sunday's round were cut to 15 teams and the nine lowest scorers not on those teams. Tech climbed from 28th to 17th Sunday with the second-best round of the day, a 3-under, but came up five strokes short of advancing or four strokes short of forcing a playoff.

"We dug a big hole," Tech coach Greg Sands said, "and I was really proud that we at least gave ourselves a chance to make the 15. That shows a lot of character from the guys to hang in there."

Baton Rouge Regional medalist Baard Skogen tied for 40th, following up a 74-79 the first two days with a 3-under 69 final Sunday. The Norwegian senior made four birdies and a bogey.

Matthew Comegys (79-74-75) finished 12-over, and Tyran Snyders (82-76-73) finished 15-over. Vicente Marzilio opened 80-77 and was replaced in the lineup by Charlie DeLong, who shot 79 Sunday.

Scott is continuing a strong postseason after he tied for second at the Baton Rouge Regional.

"The sky's the limit with the kid," Sands said. "He's got all the talent in the world. He's one of probably the most talented kids out here, but he's still learning how to play golf. ... This is just a glimpse of what kind of player he is."

Texas Tech advanced to the NCAA championships for the fourth year in a row, the last three years at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Red Raiders tied for 13th in 2021 and tied for 15th last year, failing to advance from a playoff to the fourth round. In 2022, Tech was eighth after 72 holes and lost to Vanderbilt in the match-play quarterfinals.

The individual medalist will be determined Monday after 72 holes. The field will be cut to eight teams and seeded into a match-play bracket to start Tuesday.

Illinois is 2-under and leading the team race by six over Virginia.

The individual leaderboard has Ohio State's Adam Wallin at 5-under with a two-shot lead.
