The Byrd boys golf team came from several shots down on the back nine to shoot a 593 team score and win the LHSAA Division I Golf Championship on Tuesday at the Farm d’Allie Golf Club in Carencro.

“It was definitely not our best stuff, but the guys showed a lot of mental toughness in coming back,” Byrd coach Meredith Duncan said. “They knew they were down, but they said this is not happening and they stepped up and did what they needed to do to win.”

The team of Ethan Dial (148), Grant Reagan (148), Duke Bowen (149), Shep Smith (150) and James Holtzclaw (155) were able to top second-place Benton, which shot 302-294−596 over two days. Byrd went 289-304 for the 593 total on a course that was tough over the last five holes, according to Duncan.

“Grant was the last one coming up to No. 18, and he hit a good drive but was a little unlucky when it ended up behind a tree and some roots,” Duncan said. “I told him he just needed to make bogey. He was able to get out, hit a good approach and get us what we needed.”

It was the second consecutive state title for Byrd, which also won in 2019 for Duncan.

Benton’s strong showing came from Miller Davis (143), Noah McWilliams (143), Kade Bryant (153), Cason Toms (158) and Colton Halverson (160).

“Benton played really, really well,” Duncan said. “They made birdie after birdie after birdie to keep the pressure on.”
