Byng teams bring home third-place trophies

Dec. 12—DALE — Things looked bleak for the Byng Lady Pirates against Oklahoma Christian School Saturday during the third-place contest of the Boomarang Classic in Dale.

The Lady Pirates found themselves trailing by as many as 17 points in the third quarter.

Just call those girls the comeback kids.

Byng put together an incredible rally to end the game and stunned the Lady Saints 69-61 to bring home the third-place hardware.

The Lady Pirates, who dropped a 62-37 decision to host Dale on Friday in the semifinals, enter tonight's home game with Sulphur at 3-3. Oklahoma Christian School is also 3-3.

"A switch flipped," Byng head coach Luke Clark said of his team's epic comeback. "We had a relentlessness about us that we haven't seen to this point in the year. Our kids showed tremendous resiliency and made all of the effort plays it takes to win big games. I thought our guard play during our massive run was absolutely amazing."

None more amazing than Alona Cooper, who erupted for a season-high 34 points. She hit five 3-pointers in the contest.

The Byng boys also brought home a third-place trophy after a 59-53 victory over Kingston. Byng improved to 4-2 on the year, while the Redskins dropped to 1-5.

BOYS

Byng 59, Kingston 53

Byng had a seemingly comfortable 45-28 lead after three quarters but Kingston made it close by finishing the game on a 25-14 run.

"I thought we did a very good job defensively. We were able to really get out and pressure," said Byng boys coach Jared Gambrel. "Offensively, we struggled to get paint touches and pressure the rim. It's something that we're progressively improving on each and every day. But we have to learn to stay patient and consistent on the offensive end in order to take pressure off of our defense."

Malachi Schilreff scored 16 points to lead a balanced Byng offensive attack. Tyler Raney was next with 12 points and Mark Birdshead followed with 11. Bo Boatwright scored 10 big points in the paint for the Pirates.

Birdshead and Raney both hit a pair of 3-pointers.

Kingston post player Reid Cason led his team with 21 points. Brock Rumer drained four 3-pointers and scored 16 for the Redskins and Hayden Seeney also hit double digits with 11, including three triples.
