Bulldogs bite Bearcats, 86-31, remain perfect in district at 9-0

Feb. 2—SOUTHWEST NORTH DAKOTA — There was a slew of hoops action in Southwest North Dakota on Thursday, Feb. 1, as Bowman County continued their impressive hot-streak with a Division B/Region 3-District 5 win over Glen Ullin-Hebron, 86-31, while Richardton-Taylor saw a career night from AshLynn Christensen's 22 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Meanwhile, New England was upended by Hettinger-Scranton, 49-33, at home.

Bowman County simply cannot be slowed down at this stage and improved to a still-perfect 9-0 in District 5 with a huge home-win over Glen Ullin-Hebron, more-than doubling-up the visitors in the process.

In all, 12 players wound up on the scoresheet for the Bulldogs (15-2 overall), who came out firing on their way to a commanding 32-10 advantage at the end of the first quarter and building a 49-16 advantage at the half. Senior guard Jaci Fischer ripped off 15 of her 17 points — which included a pair of 3s — in the opening 16 minutes of play, and junior forward Raegen Honeyman drained her own couple of treys in the first half as part of her game-high 18. BCHS converted 5-of-6 from the free-throw line in the first two quarters and ended up going 9-for-11 from the charity-stripe in the game.

The second half saw more of the same dominance from the Bulldogs — who held the visitors to single-digits in the final three quarters, including 9 in the third and 6 in the fourth — while junior forward Sophia Headley sank a 3-pointer on her way to a double-digit 12 on the night and sophomore guard Teagan Homelvig came off the bench to score 8 points in the final frame.

Cassidy Christensen had a team-high 15 for the Bearcats (3-14, 2-5), and Paige Kraenzel scored 8, but no other Glen Ullin-Hebron player was in double-figures during the game.

Next-up for BCHS will be a showdown with non-district Central McLean on Monday, Feb. 5 at Trinity High School in Dickinson before their regular-season finale with Richardton-Taylor the next day at home.

Richardton-Taylor built a huge, 15-5 lead in the first quarter and held the visiting South Heart Eagles to single-digits in the opening two frames to post a 23-7 halftime advantage and never looked back.

Christensen has been on a tear lately, and paced the home-team through the opening 16 minutes with 12 points — which included a trey — while junior forward Mariska Krank sank a shot from behind the arc and converted 4-of-7 from the line to score 9 of her 13 points in the first half.

Christensen kept up the pressure with 10 more points in the second half — and wound up with 10 rebounds — to help RTHS close out the game down the stretch.

Kailee Tescher scored a team-high 11 for the Eagles and Megan Robb added 9, but no other South Heart athlete was in double-digits in the game.

Next-up for the Raiders (7-10, 2-5) will be their trip to Bowman County on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

Hettinger-Scranton moved to 9-7 overall on the 2023-24 season and stands at fourth place in the district after dominating New England on the road on Thursday, putting together a 25-15 lead at the half and holding all Tiger athletes to single-digits in the game.

The 3-pointers were flying all over the place for the Nighthawks, who sank 4 treys in the first half and 10 on the night to keep the home-team from gaining any traction. Junior guard Laela Jensen jumped out to 7 points in the first half, which included a shot from behind the arc, and then went bananas in the second half with 5 more treys on her way to a game-high 24 points. Her classmate Monica Morris also was a threat from behind the 3-point line, draining 2 and pouring in a double-digit 10 points.

The Tigers (7-11, 1-3) managed only 18 points in the second half, but sophomore guard Carly Wolf scored 5 of her 8 points in the last 16 minutes and she was joined by fellow sophomore Kalie Dinius at 8 on the night.

Next-up for Hettinger-Scranton (4-3 in District 5), will be a road-date at Trenton on Saturday, Feb. 3, while New England will be hosting South Heart on Tuesday, Feb. 6.
