One of the biggest and most important contract negotiations in the history of the Buffalo Bills is getting closer by the day. With only a single season remaining on his contract with the team, Tyrod Taylor is also entering the most important season of his career with his performance this year set to determine his value this offseason.

However, a recent event that made shockwaves throughout the NFL has also altered the face of what Taylor’s future contract may look like. Despite having a subpar year due to injuries and other factors, former number one overall pick Andrew Luck signed a new contract with the Indianapolis Colts.

Now while the overall value of the contract — $140 million over six years — may seem a bit under priced. After all, the hype that many put on this set of negotiations made it likely that this deal would be record breaking on a value front. However, one area that will be a concern for many teams during there contract negotiations will be the $87 million guaranteed in the contract which is the most ever given to a quarterback.

The main question now leads many to ask where this leaves the Buffalo Bills and Tyrod Taylor. Should he perform this season on the same level of last year and lead the team to the playoffs for the first time since 1999, Taylor will undoubtedly be labeled a top ten NFL quarterback.

With that type of status as well as the love from the fan base for returning the Bills to the playoffs the pressure on the team’s front office will be immense. While they will not want to overpay the quarterback who was an unknown prior to coming to Buffalo last season, they face angering the fans by letting him walk away from some low ball offers.

However, should Taylor have a sophomore slump with the Buffalo Bills this season, the team and the player could be left going in different directions. Though Taylor will still be seen as a massively talented player, questions will have to be asked especially in a contract year.

Assuming that Taylor does have a successful season and leads the Bills back to the playoffs, his next contract will be an expensive one. While Luck’s deal will only pay him on average $23 million per season, new Houston quarterback Brock Osweiler is making about $18 million per year.

With defensive star Stephon Gilmore also entering a contract year, the Bills will be an extremely tough and expensive spot. It is unlikely that they will sign both players with this season likely to be the deciding factor on which player the Buffalo Bills try to lockup at some point in the next few months.
