Buffalo Bills claim WR Rico Gafford, DT Joey Ivie off waivers

The Buffalo Bills announced on Tuesday that the team picked up two players off of the wavier wire ahead of their preseason finale against the Green Bay Packers on Saturday.

The pair of players are defensive tackle Joey Ivie and wide receiver Rico Gafford.

Gafford was recently released by the Arizona Cardinals. He signed with the Las Vegas Raiders following the 2018 NFL draft as an undrafted rookie.

In college, Gafford was a teammate of Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen at the University of Wyoming. There he played cornerback but since joining the pros, Gafford has transitioned to wide receiver.

In eight career games with the Raiders, Gafford has two receptions for 66 yards and a 49-yard touchdown catch.

Ive was a seventh-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in 2017. He eventually went on to play in eight games in 2019 between the Tennessee Titans and Kansas City Chiefs. He recorded two tackles and a QB hit in those games.

Prior to signing with the Bills, Ivie was in training camp with the Indianapolis Colts.

Both Gafford and Ivie are likely additions to play in Buffalo’s preseason finale so the team does not have to risk injury to other players on the team’s roster.

Perhaps if they impress this week Gafford and Ivie could be practice squad candidates.

The Bills added Gafford and Ivie on the same day where several players on the team were transferred to the Reserve/COVID list as well. Among those were wide receivers Cole Beasley and Gabriel Davis and defensive tackles Vernon Butler and Star Lotulelei.
