Buckeye board kicks off new year

Jan. 11—ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — The Buckeye Local Board of Education started a new year by electing Shannon Pike as board president and Stephanie Patriarco as her assistant.

New board member Chad Miller was also sworn into office during a re-organizational meeting on Tuesday night at the district's board office at Braden Middle School.

During the regular meeting, the board unanimously approved several financial adjustments including $15,868.75 in student activity appropriations. Treasurer Kassandra Brand said the funds came from money raised to help different parts of the school system.

Brand also said a 90-minute training session is planned at the Braden Middle School Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 23 and is open to any charitable organization. The seminar will be taught by Beth Short of the Ohio Attorney General's Charitable division.

"We add to the budget any money raised," Brand said.

In other business:

—The board approved the transportation mileage reimbursement rate at 67 cents a mile effective Jan. 1.

—The 2024-25 fiscal tax budget will begin July 1.

—The board revised the minimum wage to $10.45 per hour for student workers.

—The pay rate for substitute couriers, crossing guards and summer non-contract maintenance employees was also raised to $10.45 an hour

—The district voted to accept a $77.40 donation to Kingsville Elementary School from Joann Fabrics and $320 from the Freedom Krawlers Jeep Group to Kingsville Elementary School.

—Students of the month from the district's four buildings were honored by principals. Those recognized were Anna Laugen, a sophomore, at Edgewood High School; David Ogren, a sixth grader at Braden Middle School; Cali Wiley, a second grader at Kingsville Elementary School; and Robert Taylor Jr., a second grader at Ridgeview Elementary School.
