Browns, Panthers discussing trade for quarterback Baker Mayfield

The NFL’s offseason has moved into the mandatory minicamp portion of preparation for the 2022 season and there still hasn’t been a resolution to the Baker Mayfield saga with the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns, who are still in a public relations nightmare surrounding Deshaun Watson’s off-field allegations of sexual assault, have been reluctant to move Mayfield, their starter for the last four seasons.

But as minicamp unfolds across the league, apparently talks have increased. According to CBS Analyst Jonathan Jones, who also spent time on the Panthers beat with the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers have a sense of urgency to get a deal done.

From Carolina’s perspective, they’d like to get a deal done soon so that Mayfield can have the most time to get acclimated to the Panthers’ offense and spend time with the wide receiver group he’d be throwing to.

At the moment, Sam Darnold looks to be the starter for the Panthers, and while he’s still a young player with room to grow, Mayfield is a better option at quarterback at this point in their careers.
