Brooks Orpik joins Capitals' player development department

Brooks Orpik retired this summer after 15 seasons in the NHL, but will be staying within the Washington Capitals organization as a member of their Player Development Department the team announced Monday.

The two time Stanley Cup champion will work closely with defensive prospects in the organization, primarily with their AHL affiliate Hershey Bears.

"As a member of our team, Brooks was a tremendous leader and a great role model for our young players," said Vice President and General Manager Brian MacLellan. "We are excited to be able to bring him back in this new role. We feel he will be a great resource for our hockey staff and our prospects."

The defenseman retired in June after a lengthy career between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals, skating in over 1,000 NHL games netting 194 points. His crushing defensive style ranks him first among blueliners in hits, and third in blocked shots since his NHL debut in 2002.
