Broncos unlikely to find a trade partner for QB Russell Wilson
The Denver Broncos have several options for how to proceed with Russell Wilson, and one of those options is trading the quarterback this spring.
It’s an unlikely scenario, though, because other clubs do not appear to be interested in a potential trade.
“I haven’t heard anything from any teams,” Broncos GM George Paton said at the NFL combine on Tuesday. “We’ll see.”
Depending on how the Broncos and Wilson’s next team agreed to split up the quarterback’s contract, Denver could — in theory — get some salary cap relief if they trade Wilson instead of cut him.
Few (if any) teams would be willing to trade for the QB’s existing contract, though. If the Broncos release Wilson as expected, he will still be paid by Denver in 2024. That would likely allow Wilson’s next team to sign him as a free agent at (or near) the league minimum.
Even if Wilson never returns to a Pro Bowl level of play, signing a veteran QB with a Super Bowl win on his resume for the league minimum should be an attractive option for several QB-needy teams.
So there’s no reason for a team to trade for Wilson now when they expect the QB to become a cheap free agent in the coming weeks. Denver is expected to make a decision on Wilson’s future by March 13.
