Broncos request interview with Cowboys DC Dan Quinn for HC job
The Denver Broncos have asked the Dallas Cowboys permission to interview defensive coordinator Dan Quinn for their open head coach position, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport first reported Monday.
Quinn, 51, would be a candidate to replace former coach Vic Fangio, who was fired by the Broncos on Sunday.
Quinn was a defensive line coach with the Miami Dolphins from 2005-2006, overlapping with Denver general manager George Paton’s tenure as Miami’s director of pro personnel (2001-2006). Quinn also wanted to reunite with Paton in 2015 when he was a head coach candidate.
Quinn’s connection with Paton makes him the presumed front runner for the Broncos’ head coach job, but the team will consider multiple candidates. Denver has also asked to interview New England Patriots linebackers coach Jerod Mayo, and more interviews will be scheduled in the coming days.
Quinn served as the Seattle Seahawks’ defensive coordinator from 2013-2014, reaching back-to-back Super Bowls while leading a defense that dominated the Broncos 43-8 in Super Bowl XLVIII. After that, he was hired by the Atlanta Falcons as a head coach.
Quinn went 43-42 in Atlanta before being fired in 2020. Quinn helped the Falcons reach Super Bowl LI in 2016, but they suffered an embarrassing 34–28 loss to the Patriots after blowing a 28-3 third-quarter lead.
Quinn is now running the Cowboys’ defense, and he helped the team defeat the New Orleans Saints 27-17 as an interim coach in December while Mike McCarthy was sidelined with COVID-19.
It’s very early, but Quinn might already be the favorite for the job given his connection with Paton. Because the Cowboys are in the playoffs, Quinn will not be available for an interview until next week.
