Broc Dial steps down after seven seasons as Dalton football coach

Broc Dial will no longer be the head football coach at Dalton High School.

Dial turned in his resignation as the program's coach Thursday, along with meeting with his players and notifying team parents, following one of the most successful runs in recent Wayne County history. He did not give a specific reason for leaving in his resignation letter or during an interview with The Daily Record.

"It may be a good time for a new voice and my plan is to still be here and help in any way I can and still support the amazing kids in the community, and be able to raise my kids here," Dial said.

Broc Dial won 68 games in seven seasons at Dalton.

The resignation comes a little more than a month after Dial led Dalton to the Division VII state championship — the first state title game appearance in the history of the successful program. During Dial's seven years at the helm (in two different stints — 2016-2018, 2019-2024), Dalton went 68-18 and won five Wayne County Athletic League titles.

"All the past and current players, I thank them for working hard and buying in to what we were trying to teach," Dial said. "They're awesome young men. I really appreciate the parents and all the support they had. I love the students, I love the parents, I love the community. Dalton is a special place. I've really loved it, I've really enjoyed it. I'm really grateful and thankful for the opportunity."

Dial became the second Dalton head coach to turn in his resignation in the past two days, joining former basketball coach Justin Greenfelder.

"We are grateful for Broc's leadership the past few years," Dalton Local Schools superintendent Scott Beatty said. "This could not have been an easy decision to step away but (we) understand the time commitment can be difficult, especially during a championship season."

Despite stepping down from his position as head football coach, Dial will remain a teacher at Dalton High School and plans on remaining in the community that he has adopted as his own for the long haul.

"As of today, my expectation is to still be teaching at Dalton next year and the next several years, hopefully for a long time," Dial said. "My kids still go here. Like I said, it's a great community and a great school system. I want my kids to be a part of it."

Dial is a father to three children, all currently in the Dalton school system: Lucas, Adam and Cecilia.

Dalton will move forward immediately in looking for a new football coach.

Interested candidates should include a resume, cover letter and references and send to sbeatty@daltonlocal.org, addressed to Mr. Scott Beatty, Dalton Local Schools, 177 N. Mill St., Dalton, OH 44618.

Dalton plans to fill the position by the first week of March.
