Week 1 high school football roundup: Britton-Hecla hangs on vs. Great Plains Lutheran

WATERTOWN — Bryce Hawkinson rushed for 156 yards and two third-quarter touchdowns to propel Britton-Hecla to a 20-16 season-opening Eastern Coteau Conference football win over Great Plains Lutheran on Friday night at Watertown Stadium.

The Braves led 6-0 at halftime and trailed 8-6 before Hawkinson found the end zone of runs of 20 and 15 yards on back-to-back possessions in the third quarter.

Great Plains Lutheran got back within striking distance on an 70-yard scoring strike from Brody Scharlemann to Hayden Karli but Britton-Hecla's defense held off GPL's last-chance possession that ended in Braves' territory.

Jaxon Zuehlke scored on a 1-yard plunge in the first quarter for Britton-Hecla, which had 207 yards of total offense (196 rushing).

Great Plains Lutheran rushed for 127 yards and passed for 171, but was hurt by six fumbles (four of which they lost).

Scharlemann completed seven of 18 passes for 171 yards, including a 22-yard TD strike to Alex Heil in the third quarter. Micah Holien added a pair of conversion runs.

Holien rushed for 40 yards on 12 carries, Scharlemann 34 on eight and Thomas Erickson 23 on six. Holien also caught three passes for 37 yards and Martin Krenz two for 34.

Zuehlke led Britton-Hecla's defense with eight tackles and a fumble recovery. Myles York tallied 11 tackles, Erickson eight, Holien six and Jacob Bartels five with a quarterback sack for GPL.

De Smet 40, Castlewood 12

DE SMET — Britt Carlson accounted for 206 yards of total offense and four touchdowns to lead second-rated Class 9B De Smet past fourth-rated Class 9A Castlewood.

Carlson completed 11 of 20 passes for 120 yards and three touchdowns, two to Tom Augenbaugh and another to Ganon Henrich. Carlson also rushed for 86 yards and a score and added five tackles on defense.

Kadyn Fast rushed for 66 yards and two scores for the Bulldogs. Fast also made five tackles.

Other De Smet leaders included Aughenbaugh, 95 receiving yards, four tackles and an interception; Trace Van Regenmorter, 40 yards rushing and six tackles; Gannon Gilligan, 11 tackles; Sam Gigov, seven tackles; Tristan Olson, five tackles; and Grant Wilkinson, four tackles including a quarterback sack.

Quincy Thu returned a kickoff 85 yards for a TD and Brody Bass added a rushing TD for the Warriors. Thu made 13 tackles and Kamden Keszler 11. Bass added 27 yards rushing and eight tackles.

Hamlin 54, Florence-Henry 0

HENRY — Evan Stormo scored four touchdowns to help fourth-rated Class 9AA Hamlin open its season with a victory.

Stormo rushed for 63 yards and scores of 40 and 23 yards. He also caught two passes for 38 yards, one a 25-yard score and the other a 13-yard score from Tyson Stevenson.

Stevenson completed five of 10 passes for 64 yards and rushed for 52 yards. He also teamed with his brother Turner on a 5-yard TD pass and scored on a 7-yard run. Jackson Wadsworth (6 yards) and Brody Randall (4 yards) added TD runs.

Dawson Lantgen completed four of 13 passes for 26 yards and Karter Kohlenberg added 13 yards rushing and 16 yards receiving for the Falcons. Kohlenberg also made five tackles and Lantgen intercepted a pass.

Aberdeen Roncalli 14, Groton Area 0

GROTON — Brody Weinmeister rushed for 74 yards and two third-quarter touchdowns (25 and 6 yards) to lift Roncalli to the win.

The Cavaliers finished with 149 yards rushing and 96 passing. Kaden Larson rushed for 37 yards and Zane Backous for 34. Backous also completed six of 12 passes for 96 yards, including two to Weinmeister for 53 and one to Jett Johnson for 33.

Aiden Fisher kicked to point-after kicks and led Roncalli's defense with seven tackles. Noah Kramer added six tackles and an interception and Weinmeister five tackles.

Korbin Kuecker rushed for 54 yards and also tossed a 35-yard completion for Groton Area. Lane Tietz went 11-for-29 passing for 73 yards for the Tigers, who had 169 yards of offense. Keegan Tracy caught three passes for 55 yards and Teylor Diegel three for 23.

Brevin Fliehs recorded 11 tackles, Christian Ehresmann seven, Logan Ringgenberg six and Karter Moody four for Groton Area. Ringgenberg, Moody and Jaeger Kampa each had sacks.

Deuel 26, Clark-Willow Lake 8

CLARK — Trey Maaland scored on a 2-yard run and a conversion run, and tossed three touchdown passes to Gabe Sather for the Cardinals.

Maaland rushed 14 times for 58 yards and completed 13 of 25 passes for 204 yards, teaming with Sather six times for 128 yards and on scoring passes of 10, 31 and 40 yards. Owen Haas contributed 79 yards rushing and Oliver Fieber made three receptions for 30 yards.

Griffin Musser scored on a 44-yard run for the Cyclones. Emmerson Larson added the conversion. Musser finished with 81 yards rushing.

Reed VanWormer recorded nine tackles, Robert Begalka seven, Dexter Unzen six and Aidan Baer five for Deuel's defense. Unzen also intercepted a pass. Elliot Bratland, Collin Gaikowski and Musser each made nine tackles for CWL.

Deubrook Area 40, Estelline-Hendricks 12

WHITE — Gavin Landmark rushed 19 times for 133 yards and three touchdowns (5, 23 and 4 yards) to lead the Dolphins past the Redhawks. He also added a conversion run.

Jace Vomacka completed eight of 14 passes for 73 yards and a conversion. Nolan Peterson caught four passes for 56 yards.

Devon Landmark led the Dolphins' defense with nine tackles and a fumble recovery.

Dell Rapids St. Mary 38, Waverly-South Shore 12

WAVERLY — The fourth-rated Class 9B Cardinals kicked off their season with the non-conference win.

The host Coyotes scored on an interception return by Sam Appelhof and on a 28-yard pass from Zach Ries to Colton Kranz. Cody Thompson intercepted a pass.

Hitchcock-Tulare 50, Northwestern 0

MELLETTE — Big games from Brendan Nowell and Erik Salmen powered top-rated and defending state Class 9B champion Hitchcock-Tulare to the victory.

Nowell completed five of nine passes for 151 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for 43 yards and two other scores (26 and 12 yards). Salmen rushed 10 times for 125 yards and two TDs (12 and 55 yards).

Patrick Maynard (34 yards), Mason Tschetter (30 yards) and Payton Chasing Hawk (74 yards) each caught TD passes from Nowell.

Salmen also had seven solo tackles and five assists, Jackson Maynard 6-5, Blaze Binger 4-1 and Dalton Rathjen 4-0 for the Patriots' defense.

Leola-Frederick Area 26, Herreid-Selby Area 0

SELBY — Leola-Frederick Area knocked off the third-rated Class 9B Wolverines with touchdown runs from Brayden Sumption, Gavin Nickeson, Austin Mantei and Westyn Thorpe.

Porter Gregg rushed for 24 yards, Houston Hauge 21 and Mason Vetter 20 for HSA, which got nine tackles from Cole Zabel and seven from Wayde Grage.

Wolsey-Wessington 50, Iroquois-Lake Preston 0

LAKE PRESTON — Third-rated Class 9A Wolsey-Wessington outgained the host Sharks 458-to-14 in yards during the game, which ended before halftime.

Caleb Richmond rushed for 48 yards and two touchdowns and also caught an 80-yard TD pass for the Warbirds. Austin Wyant rushed for 111 yards (67-yard TD), Tate French 82 (85-yard TD), Gabe Case 74 (30-yard TD) and Colin Hughes 37 (24-yard TD).

Nathan Enninga rushed for 17 yards for ILP, which had five tackles each from Lucas Peskey and AJ Wienk.

Elkton-Lake Benton 56, Colman-Egan 16

ELKTON — The Elks rolled on Thursday night behind four rushing touchdowns from Colt Beck, two from Blake DeVries and another from Riddick Westley. Beck rushed for 64 yards and completed four passes for 65 yards to Carson Griffith. Westley rushed for 51 yards.

Jonny Keyes and Sutton Bunde each had rushing TDs for Colman-Egan. Jack Mousel rushed for 34 yards and passed for 134, teaming with Jase Mousel four times for 120.

Webster Area 20, Mobridge-Pollock 6

WEBSTER — The Bearcats won their opener and provided new head coach Tyler Wagner with his first career victory.

Brent Bearman (rushing), Jacob Keller (receiving from Ian Lesnar) and Matthew Mount (fumble recovery) each scored touchdowns for Webster Area.

Faulkton Area 24, Ipswich 6

FAULKTON — Spencer Melius found the end zone on a 2-yard run and an 87-yard kickoff return for Faulkton Area, which also scored on a 5-yard run by Garrett Cramer.

Tristan Baloun rushed for 49 yards on six carries and Melius recorded five tackles.

Max Kulesa completed 18 of 39 passes for 171 yards and scored on a 4-yard run for Ipswich. Casey Geditz rushed for 36 yards and caught three passes for 38. Tucker Kadlec hauled in three passes for 41 yards.

Potter County 68, Newell 30

GETTYSBURG — Carter Luikens rushed for 108 yards on 10 carries and scored four touchdowns to spark the offensive explosion for Potter County.

Luikens had TD runs of 4, 18 and 37 yards and also caught an 82-yard pass from Landon Larson. Chance Smith (1 and 10 yards) and Xavier Hobert (1 yard) added TD runs. Hobert also caught a 54-yard pass from Ryder Falkenhagen, who scored on a 60-yard punt return and a 36-yard interception return.

Larson completed four of eight passes for 113 yards. connecting with Luikens three times for 110. Smith tallied six tackles and Tanner Vander Vorst five.

William Juelfs hauled in a 55-yard TD pass from James Duncan and also scored on runs of 1 and 75 yards for Newell. He finished with 215 yards rushing on 19 carries. Gavin Tesch added a 1-yard TD plunge.

Arlington 50, Oldham-Ramona-Rutland 12

ARLINGTON — After an 0-8 season last fall, the Cardinals got off on the right foot by rolling to the win over ORR on Saturday.

It was the first win for Arlington since the final regular-season game of the 2021 season.

Hot Springs 55, Redfield 0

HOT SPRINGS — Hot Springs handled Redfield in a season-opening high school football game on Saturday.

Sisseton 40, Dakota Hills 0

WILMOT — Hughin Current ran for 84 yards and three touchdowns (25, 9 and 4 yards) to lead Sisseton to the victor4y.

Nate DeSpiegler completed 16 of 24 passes for 186 yards and teamed with Nate Tchida on TD passes of 16 and 20 yards. Rory Current added a 3-yard run for the Redmen.

Lavonte Carter rushed for 100 yards on eight carries and Tchida caught seven passes for 91 yards. Mason Shultz had six solo tackles and an assist, Landyn Steichen 5-1 and Taylor Snaza 4-1 for Sisseton's defense. Shultz, Steichen and Snaza each had a quarterback sack and Mason Herzog recovered a fumble.

Brooks Dylan was involved in 12 tackles with one quarterback sack for Dakota Hills. He also rushed for 33 yards for the Grizzlies, who gained 51 yards rushing and 51 yards passing. Teagan Gaikowski hauled in three passes for 36 yards. Dylan Rumpza added seven tackles and Gaikowski six.
