Class 6A: Viera 5, West Boca Raton 2

VIERA — The Viera Hawks advanced to the regional final after finishing with a 5-2 win over West Boca Raton in the Region 2-6A semifinal Friday night.

After a closely-played first half, Viera went on to score three goals in the second half to push the team to this win.

"To be able to win still playing your worst game is a positive thing for us," Viera head coach Calvin Dixon said. "At halftime, I told them they were playing very nervous, and we looked very nervous. We were rushing it, we weren't direct, and we were clearing balls that didn't need to be cleared."

Despite the score being tied at one for most of the first half, Viera still went into the second half with a 2-1 lead after Gianna Buysse scored a goal three minutes before halftime.

After halftime, the Hawks found themselves tied again with the Bulls five minutes into the second half when Giovana Canali scored a goal for West Boca Raton.

With 26:41 left on the clock, Brienna McCain delivered the tie-breaking goal to put Viera in front for good.

The Hawks scored again four minutes later when Eva McMenemy-Hoang scored a penalty kick that was given after a handball by West Boca Raton in the box. Meghan Nadle sealed the win for Viera with a fifth goal when she connected on a pass from Buysse.

"We needed to settle down and play and I think in the second half we started to do that," Dixon said. "When we do that, then we look as good what we did in the second half."

Oviedo will travel to Viera on Feb. 21 for the regional final game.
