Breaking down new Dolphins TE Eric Saubert’s contract
With Mike Gesicki moving on to the New England Patriots and Hunter Long included in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams, the Miami Dolphins only had Durham Smythe and Tanner Conner in the tight end room.
That was before they signed former Denver Broncos tight end Eric Saubert to join the group.
According to Over the Cap, Saubert and the Dolphins agreed to a one-year deal that will pay him roughly $1.69 million. The tight end will make $1.08 million a base salary ($500,000 of which is guaranteed), $350,000 in a signing bonus and $255,000 in per-game roster bonuses. His cap hit for 2023 is set at $1.69 million.
Saubert’s spot on the roster isn’t totally guaranteed for the 2023 season, as Miami could still add talented veterans or rookies through the draft that could push him down and off of the depth chart.
If the Dolphins were to cut Saubert they could save $835,000 and be left with only $850,000 in dead cap. If they were to trade him, perhaps for a conditional late draft pick, they could save $1.34 million and be left with just $350,000 in dead cap.
Saubert’s signing is a good one, as it brings in an expensive player for the group, but it can’t be the only move Miami makes at the position.
