Brandon Nimmo 'seeing some good signs' from Mets entering summer
Approaching the end of the season’s first two months, the Mets sit right at .500 with a 27-27 record and the third place spot in the National League East standings.
Even with a series loss to Colorado this weekend, Brandon Nimmo sees areas of optimism for New York with the summer months approaching.
“Not exactly where we want to be,” Nimmo said. “I think we’re seeing some good signs here. The offense is coming alive. We’re starting to find a groove there with more consistency. Into the summer months, that will only help. Just trying to piece it all together. We’re a better team than what our record is right now."
In further areas of emphasis, Nimmo complimented the impacts of New York’s rising young players in Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty and Mark Vientos through their own contributions through 54 games.
“The young guys are getting comfortable up here,” Nimmo said. “They’re doing a good job. They bring a lot to this lineup. Really excited about those young guys.”
Specifically with Alvarez, the catcher showed the ability to significantly add depth to the lineup with two long three-run home runs against the Rockies on Saturday and Sunday. After hitting under .200 in April, Alvarez is hitting over .300 with seven home runs in May.
“It’s been unbelievable,” Nimmo said. “If he keeps doing things like that, he’s going to help our offense out. We score more runs when he’s in the lineup.”
Nimmo and the Mets have a chance to improve in June and make a statement in the division with two series against Philadelphia and a big midweek series against the Braves in Atlanta.
