Boys volleyball, girls field hockey joining MHSAA's listing of sports

The Michigan High School Athletic Association is adding to its listing of sponsored sports.

The organization announced Thursday that boys volleyball and girls field hockey will become sports for which it sponsors a postseason tournament starting in the 2025-26 school year. The MHSAA's representative council approved the additions during its spring meeting.

Boys volleyball and field hockey are the first new sports added to the MHSAA's list of tournament offerings since boys and girls lacrosse in 2004-05.

Boys volleyball will be played in the spring, while girls field hockey will take place in the fall. The 2024-25 school year will be a developmental period as the MHSAA works with the governing organizations for both sports.

The council also agreed to start seeding the entire districts for boys and girls basketball and soccer using the Michigan Power Ratings data starting next school year. The MPR data previously had only been used to seed the top two teams in each district for basketball and soccer.

Starting in the 2025-26 school year, the MHSAA winter calendar will end a week earlier. The adjusted calendar will feature the boys basketball finals taking place during the second weekend in March. The girls basketball and boys swim and dive state finals will permanently take place in the third weekend of March and cap the winter sports season.
