Boys lacrosse: Mamaroneck dispatches North Rockland to earn Class A title game rematch

MAMARONECK – The inevitable tension is beginning to build.

All season long, Mamaroneck has worked to dial in a game plan to recapture the Section 1 Class A title. Momentum is not an issue. The Tigers earned a rematch with a 12-7 semifinal win over North Rockland on Friday, allowing the focus to shift to next week’s showdown against Scarsdale.

It’s going to be a working weekend.

“From the start we’ve built things up,” Mamaroneck midfielder Andrew Glinski said. “We made sure to focus on high-intensity practices and we’re definitely where we want to be. We won a bunch of games down the stretch. We have a lot of things we can't share lined up for the championship and we’re excited. We know who the opponent is and we’re ready to get some revenge.”

The Raiders have won in upset fashion each of the previous two seasons.

“We all know the anticipation for a Scarsdale-Mamaroneck matchup,” Tigers attackman Rhett Chambers said. “It’s not just lacrosse, it goes across the board. It’s like this in all sports. The last couple of years the rivalry has ramped up.

"The last two stung.”

Mamaroneck was not distracted against the Red Raiders but was deadlocked 2-2 after one.

“We knew we were the underdogs, but we also knew we could throw a couple of punches,” North Rockland goalie Kevin Devine said. “We were in it, but it got away from us. It’s rough that it ends this way. They definitely capitalize when you make a mistake. They have great sticks, great players.”

Jack Ramsay and Chambers had Mamaroneck on top 6-2 in a matter of seven minutes.

“We just had to settle in a little bit,” Glinski added. “We obviously know the goalie and they were packing in the zone, so we had to make the adjustment. We just had to dial in and focus on keeping possession and it worked out for us.”

What it means

There is drama each time Mamaroneck and Scarsdale get together and the next installment faces off at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Yorktown High School. Both sides played close to the vest when they met on May 10. The Tigers won that one 13-10, which really doesn’t impact the Section 1 Class A final outside letting the newcomers in the lineup know the Raiders aren’t infallible.

Player of the game

Many teams have attempted to shut off Chambers this season, but the Providence College signee is crafty. He wound up with three goals and five assists in this one.

“Every year was even more memorable from seventh grade to now,” Devine said. “I have so many good memories after being a part of this program. I’m just sad it had to end with a loss.”

“We have a lot of young players, so the regular-season win at Scarsdale helped with confidence,” Chambers said. “We know both teams were holding stuff back. We respect them as an opponent and hope they respect us, too. It’s going to be a completely different ballgame when we get to Yorktown.”
