YORKTOWN HEIGHTS – The last time this team exited the playoffs ahead of the Section 1 title game, Jimmy Carter was president.

That’s a lot to live up to.

Yorktown kept the streak intact, posting a 10-5 win over Lakeland/Panas in a Section 1 Class B semifinal Friday at Charlie Murphy Field.

“At the end of the day, there is definitely a little bit of relief, but this is what’s expected,” Huskers long stick midfielder Chris Constantine said. “When we buy in like we did today, we get to be in games like we’ll be in on Wednesday.”

Yorktown will be making a 44th straight title game appearance on Wednesday against Greeley.

“We’re expected to win it again,” Huskers midfielder Drew Weissman said. “I think we should be able to make it to states and win it all.”

There was some tension on both sides of the fence.

Yorktown opened with a three-goal run, but the Rebels never strayed from the game plan and were only a couple of goals removed from the lead until the last five minutes when the defense was overplaying in hopes of creating turnovers.

Last-second goals in the second and third quarter were costly and four untimely turnovers let the Huskers get away.

“It did feel that close,” Lakeland/Panas coach Joe Macchi said. Those little plays sometimes make all the difference. We made some mistakes. They made some mistakes, too, but ours came at crucial times when we really needed to get a stop or really needed to possess the ball.”

Offensively, Yorktown was patient under pressure.

“Their defense is amazing,” Constantine said. “They have a couple of great poles and K.C. (Bryan) in the cage, so respect to them because they really are a great team.”

Yorktown had more confidence with the ball with Drew Weissman back in the lineup after missing six games with an ankle injury. He was on crutches earlier in the week, but that was more of a head fake than a necessity.

The Marist commit finished with three goals and two assists.

J.T. Carney also gave the Huskers a jolt, netting three goals.

“It was amazing,” Weissman said of his return. “I have to give props to my coaches, my teammates and my family who helped me get back this early. I’m just grateful to be able to play with them again. I feel 100%. Today was huge, we played together and played our best lacrosse. That’s what you need to do in the playoffs.”

Yorktown's Ryan Vogel is pressured by Lakeland/Panas' Jack Jimenez during their Section 1 Class B semifinal at Yorktown May 24, 2024. Yorktown won 10-5.

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS – The mood is noticeably improved.

After stumbling in the regular-season finale, Yorktown needed to make a statement and regain some of the lost momentum. A resounding 18-5 win over Mahopac in a Section 1 Class B quarterfinal Tuesday at Charlie Murphy Field did the job.

“I think our energy is back,” Huskers close defender Brady McEnroe said. “We definitely were down the first couple days of practice after the loss, but now I think we’re ready.”

From left, Yorktown's Brady Sheridan (19) fire a shot in front of MahopacÕs Brady Donaghy (16) during boys lacrosse playoff action at Yorktown High School May 21, 2024. Yorktown won the game 18-5.

Carmel beat Yorktown for the first time in program history last week.

And the fact that a defense this highly regarded gave up 16 goals in that loss had to have been a source of concern heading into the playoffs.

“Carmel is a really good team and we learned we’re vulnerable if we don’t bring our A game,” Huskers coach Tim Schurr explained. “I don’t know (if that was a well-timed loss) because at this time of the season you want to be playing your best. You’d rather come in on a roll.”

The Wolf Pac is likely a year or two away from contending but was able to keep the pace deliberate early and stay close for a quarter.

Gianluca Marchini and Dylan DelVecchio sparked an 11-0 run that had Yorktown up 12-1 at the break.

The offense is down a playmaker while Drew Weissmann recovers from an injury so adjustments were made over the last week.

“It’s tough to see Drew on crutches, but hopefully he’s coming back soon,” Yorktown midfielder Ryan Vogel said. “It was just good to see us score like this. We practiced this specific offense a lot this week and for it to produce a bunch of goals feels good.”

Yorktown's Dylan DelVecchio (22) falls to the ground after being hit by Mahopac's Landon Varley (19) as his shot went in for a second half goal during boys lacrosse playoff action at Yorktown High School May 21, 2024. Yorktown won the game 18-5.

Another round with Lakeland/Panas will be the focus at practice on Wednesday and Thursday, but the memory of a humbling loss to Carmel will never be completely erased.

“It was a huge wake-up call for us,” Vogel said. “We know that game will not define who we are. We had a way better season than that and we’re using it as motivation to prove that’s not who we are.”

What it means

Just seeing the ball find the back of the net 18 times had to lift spirits and give the Huskers needed confidence ahead of another neighborhood grudge match. Yorktown retained the Murphy Cup with a 7-5 win over the Rebels on May 11.

“I expect a good one,” McEnroe said. “We know they’re going to come out hot.”

Player of the game

Dylan DelVecchio stepped up to fill a void.

"A lot of people contributed," Schurr noted. "Dylan DelVecchio played his best game of the season for us, getting to the goal and finding open guys. It was a good team effort. That helps. We’ve struggled at times with settled offense."

No. 3 Greeley 12, No. 6 Fox Lane 5

CHAPPAQUA- The story wrote itself.

Fox Lane stunned Horace Greeley in the regular season on April 24, prevailing 3-2 in overtime. The Quakers had to deal with that loss to a rival for almost four weeks. On Tuesday, Greeley got revenge and won a Section 1 Class B quarterfinal matchup, 12-5.

“In sports, you never really have a chance to fix your wrongs, but tonight we got a chance,” Horace Greeley coach Ben Potash said. “Fox Lane’s a great team. They’re our rival. We knew it was going to be a tough game, but getting the monkey off our back was big.”

It wasn’t easy for the Quakers, who got down 2-0 early after a pair of goals from Fox Lane’s James Minotti. Greeley shook off the slow start and answered back, ending the quarter with three straight goals all with under two and a half minutes to play in the quarter. Connor Lummel had two of the three for Greeley and the other was scored by Tighe Dolan.

“We have been down early in the game multiple times this year,” Dolan said. “We just gotta stay positive and keep our heads up.”

Dolan scored in the second quarter, alongside UMass recruit Matthew Byrne. Greeley scored five unanswered goals to end the first half and take a 5-2 lead at the break.

This was a game of runs. After trading scoring surges in the first half, the Foxes emerged from halftime and quickly tied it up with three straight goals. Owen Baker, James Minotti, and Declan Connors all found the net during that run.

Greeley quickly responded with a goal by Jameson Blakeslee then by Byrne again with 0.4 seconds left in the third quarter.

“If you put the pieces together, we can play with anyone,” Byrne said. “It’s about doing the right things and I think we can play up to anybody.”

Greeley hardly looked back after Byrne’s goal to end the third quarter. The Quakers continued their momentum and scored five goals in the fourth to pull away from the Foxes, and kept them scoreless in the last frame.

“It’s huge,” said Potash. “Kids nowadays, they thrive off momentum. Everytime you can get a win, everytime you can get a big play, it’s super important. I think energy is the most important thing in lacrosse.”

With the win, Horace Greeley moves on to the Class B semifinals and will travel to second-seeded Somers on Friday. The Quakers lost to Mahopac in last year’s semifinals.

SCARSDALE – This program has grown accustomed to success, but a fourth consecutive Section 1 title might be a reach.

And these guys are OK with that.

Scarsdale has always embraced the underdog role. Suffern threw a reality check in a Class A quarterfinal Monday and the Raiders needed a late flurry to post a 10-6 victory and move on.

“We know nothing is guaranteed, like we saw today” senior attackman Jake Goldstein said.

Scarsdale attackman Jake Goldstein carries in for a touch during the Raiders' 10-6 win over Suffern in a Section 1 Class A quarterfinal on May 20, 2024 at Scarsdale High School.

There was genuine tension building when Finn Mitchell and Vince DiRenno got the Mounties within 4-3 at the half.

“It should change our mentality,” Scarsdale coach James Synowiez noted. “We played a brand of lacrosse that isn’t anything like what we’ve focused on the last few months, so I’m hopeful we can get away from this and back to what we do. In the playoffs, you have to play every day like it’s your last and I don’t think we took that to heart today.”

The miscues and misunderstanding became more and more disconcerting as the game unfolded.

Ben Fromme netted his third goal of the game to give the Raiders a 5-3 edge early in the second half, but Nick Tinelli and Matt Norum answered, knotting the score.

This isn’t the same group that sent Mamaroneck home again last season in the Class A final.

It’s a young team after graduating eight starters. It’s almost June, but there’s still a fair amount of sideline instruction between whistles.

“Heading into the season we knew exactly what we had,” senior attackman Rhett Needleman said. “The goals and expectations remain the same, but we’ve had to show the new kids on the team, and there are a lot, how we do things around here, how we prepare on a daily basis.”

Goldstein sparked the decisive run when he curled in with 2:11 to go and gave Scarsdale a 6-5 lead. The Raiders began to move with purpose, tacked on two more goals before the quarter ended and were up five before Suffern found the back of the net again.

Yes, there was a long conversation postgame.

“There was definitely more of a learning curve earlier in the season,” Goldstein said. “We had to pull guys aside and teach them little nuances and get them to think in more of a lacrosse way, but at this point the guys have been playing three or four months together so we should have a little rapport and the younger guys should be picking things up. There’s really no excuse to come out here and lay an egg.”

Suffern goalie Felix Schindler deflects a shot on the door-step, denying Scarsdale midfielder Ben Fromme a fourth goal. The Raiders won the Section 1 Class A quarterfinal 10-6 on May 20, 2024 at Scarsdale High School.

What it means

Scarsdale won three consecutive Section 1 and NYSPHSAA regional titles by playing like a team with nothing to lose. To get another title shot, the Raiders will have to pull off an upset at Carmel, and losing FOGO Tommy Iasiello to a non-contact injury on Monday only makes the hill a little harder to climb.

“We’re used to it,” Needleman said. “We’ve been there.”

Player of the game

Ben Fromme, a senior who did not play last season, was ready to go and finished with three goals and one assist.
