Boys Best of the Week: Northmor takes the Cowen Invitational crown in track and field

LOUDONVILLE — Northmor won the 16-team Cowen Invitational in track and field, scoring 89 points. Highland was fifth with 57 points and Cardington 13th.

Ryan Lehman led the Golden Knights with a second in the 1,600 meters in 4:38.02 and a third in the 800 in 2:11.13, while Cowin Becker was a runner-up n the 400 in 51.98, and David Blunk was third in the 1,600 in 4:38.83 and fifth in the 3,200 in 11:03.41.

The 4x400-meter relay won in 3:39.01, while the 4x200 was second in 1:36.92 and the 4x800 was third in 8:50.22. Others scoring top five finishes for Northmor were Griffin Healea (fourth, 800, 2:11.48, Levi Hunter (fifth, 300 hurdles, 46.02; fifth pole vault, 12 feet), Cade Miracle (fourth, pole vault, 12-6), and Connor Stockdale (second, long jump, 19-3).

Highland's Toby Rogers was runner-up in the 300 hurdles in 43.84 and third in the 110 hurdles in the 16.46. Also for the Scots, Ladon Hayes won the shot put at 45-11, Manuel Parsley was third in the discus at 129-8, Aron West was fourth at the long jump at 18-7.75 and the 4x200 relay was fifth in 1:39.6.

For Cardington, A.J. Brehm was fifth in the 400 at 54.86 and the 4x400 relay fourth in 3:44.26.

More Track and Field

● Big Walnut won the Virg Rankin Invitational at North Union with 157.5 points, while Pleasant was fifth with 55 and the hosts sixth with 31.5. Ridgedale and Elgin also competed. Pleasant's Hudson Warner won the long jump at 21-9, plus was third in the 110 hurdles at 16.31 and fourth in the 300 hurdles at 43.63. The Spartans were runners-up in the 4x800 relay at 9:02.55 and fifth in the 4x400 at 3:49.82. Pleasant's Nick Swartz was fifth in the 1,600 at 4:56.75 and 3,200 at 10:31.16, Landon O'Donnell fifth in the discus at 120-4 and Caleb Cameron fourth in the 800 at 2:07.59.

● For the hosts, Griffin Osborne was third in the 100 at 11.4 and fourth in the 200 at 24.11, while Brayden Scowden was fourth in the high jump at 5-8, and Owen Hoffer fourth in the discus at 121-3. Ridgedale's Brogan Weston was fourth in the 1,600 at 4:53.82 and 3,200 at 10:10.74, as Evan Ricketts was fifth in the 400 at 55.56 and Landon Murphy fifth in the long jump at 21-0. Elgin's 4x200 team was fifth in 1:42.25.

● Marion Harding was fourth at the Ontario Relays led by Carter Ferguson's win in the 3,200 in 10:03.24 and third in the 1,600 in 4:49.41. Kade Sutherland was a runner-up in the 800 in 2:06.41, while taking third were Marquis Long Jr. in the 100 in 11.58 and Franklin Weaver in the 400 in 54.93, and ending fourth was Logan Thrapp in the 200 in 25.24. Harding's 4x800 won in 9:03.6, while the 4x100 was third in 45.61 and the distance medley was fourth in 12:12.12.

● River Valley also competed at the Ontario Relays with Ethan Lyon winning the shot put at 55-1 and taking second in the discus at 162-1 and Xavier Hensel finishing fourth in the high jump at 5-6.

● Lyon also competed at the Mehock Relays in Mansfield, finishing second in both weight events in 54-1 and 167-10. For Harding, Ferguson was fourth in the 3,200 in 10:09.92 and Sutherland fifth in the 1,600 in 4:44.1.

● Mount Gilead edged Highland 133-115 in a quad meet at Highland. Winning for the Indians were Logan High in the 100 in 11.54 and 200 in 23.11, Owen Hershner in the 800 in 2:06.84, Will Baker in the 1600 in 4:38.87, Tae Davis in the 110 hurdles in 16.28, the 4x100 in 45.2 and the 4x200 in 1:35.01.

● Winning for Highland in the quad were Zane Sheets in the 400 in 56.02, Rogers in the 300 hurdles in 43.84, Hayes in the shot put in 45-9.5, Owen Winkelfoos in the high jump at 5-8, Darren Styer in the pole vault at 12-0, West in the long jump at 17-3.5, the 4x400 in 3:44.01 and 4x800 in 9:11.4.

Tennis

● Pleasant swept Lima Senior 5-0. In singles for the Spartans were Alex Yancey, Cael Bower and Landon Severns, while in doubles were Reyn Wansik/Brady Werling and Criffin Gleespen/Luke Russel.

● Marion Harding held a doubleheader with River Valley and Clear Fork and beat the Vikings 4-1 and Colts 5-0. Alexander and Sebastian Lisiecki and Cameron Williams all posted wins in both matches for the Presidents.

Baseball

● Northmor took two from Cardington in Knox Morrow Athletic Conference play. In the first one, the Knights won 5-0 as Trevor Brubaker tossed a five-hitter with six strikeouts and a walk while hitting a double. Grant Bentley also doubled and singled, while Isaac Black and Bryce Cooper both singled twice. For Cardington, Merek McClure and Denton Garrison each doubled, and A.J. Hall gave up eight hits and one earned run, walking two and striking out six.

● In the 10-3 win, Bentley threw a two-hitter with no earned runs, a walk and eight strikeouts. Cole Cuffman tripled and singled; Drew Hammond doubled and singled; and Nicolas Armrose doubled. Garrison had both of Cardington's hits, while Wyatt Wade gave up seven hits and struck out five.

● The Knights were beaten in eight innings 1-0 by East Knox as they were held to one hit. Hammond pitched 7⅔ innings with four hits, nine strikeouts and one walk.

● Cardington blasted out 18 hits in a 16-6 victory over Cristo Rey as five pitchers combined for a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Wade drive in four runs with a home run and single, while Abner Edgell tripled and doubled. Getting triples were James Fiant, Bryce Hartley and Garrison, while getting doubles were Hall, Zach Pickens and Wyatt Denney.

● North Union topped Graham 10-2 with Tyler Krebehenne striking out seven, walking one and giving up five hits. Mason Bright hit two doubles; Landon Converse and Caden Potts each hit a double and single; Drew Schmidt added a double; and Ashton Haubiel went 3-for-3. In a 4-2 loss to Graham, Bright allowed five hits and two walks with five strikeouts, but the Wildcats were limited to only three hits.

● Marion Harding got a four-hitter from Gavyn Baumgartner plus a double in an 8-4 win over River Valley. Ray J Scott-Harbolt doubled and hit a three-run homer, while Nathan Cunningham doubled and singled, and Lucas Keller and Justin Long both singled twice for the Prexies. Harding lost 4-2 to Ashland with Scott-Harbolt doubling and Cunningham singling twice.

● Elgin's Brody Wood pitched a three-hitter with four strikeouts and two walks, plus he hit two doubles during a six-inning 10-0 win over Cory-Rawson. Donaven Stitth and Mitchell Askew also doubled for the Comets. In a 11-2 loss to Kenton called after five innings by darkness, Elgin left two runners on base in every inning, but were held to five hits for the game.

● Shelby scored three unearned runs in the seventh inning to rally by Highland 3-2. Jayden Collins, Hayden Kline and Jace Brooks all doubled for the Scots, while Kort Sears only allowed three hits and two walks with nine strikeouts. Highland returned the favor in a 5-4 win over Shelby in a game that started on Wednesday and finished Saturday. The Scots scored twice in the 10th inning when Evan Johnson's suicide squeeze bunt tied it and Hendrick Karya's line drive single won it. The Scots also beat Bishop Hartley 8-6 when they were down 5-0. Sears had a double in the game.

● Pleasant was limited to five singles in an 8-4 loss to Clear Fork. Mason Moore and Brody Conway teamed to give up seven hits, four walks and six strikeouts for the Spartans. Pleasant beat Elgin 9-7 with Logan Clemons getting the win. Moore knocked a three-run homer and a single to end with four RBIs, and J.T. Snively had two singles. For Elgin, Quinten Harrison batted a two-run homer and a single, and Jacob Isler and Jacob Brown both had a pair of singles.
