Boys Best of the Week: Marion Harding scores big on tennis court to stay in MOAC hunt

MARION — The Presidents remain in the hunt for a Mid Ohio Athletic Conference boys tennis championship after a big week on the courts.

The pivotal match was a 3-2 victory over Shelby. With it tied 2-2 and the first singles match going for three hours, Marion Harding's Alexander Lisiecki prevailed for a 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 win, while his brother Sebastian and Cameron Williams also won in second and third singles matches, respectively.

The Prexies started the week by shutting out Fostoria 5-0. The Lisiecki brothers and Williams won in singles play, while Evan Birt and Andres Rosas in first doubles and Reagan Tway and Christian Pearson in second doubles also won.

In a 5-0 sweep of Bucyrus, the same singles players along with Rosas, Tway, Carter Rawlins and Brody Cahill all won. Harding also dumped Galion 5-0 with the singles players winning along with Rosas/Rawlins and Cahill/Birt. In a 3-2 score over Grandview Heights, the Lisieckis and Williams won in singles to take the match victory.

Baseball

● Elgin handled Temple Christian 17-0 in five innings as Jacob Isler and Brody Wood combined for a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts and two walks. Four players had two RBIs as Mitchel Askew led with three singles. Stephen Castillo and Isler both singled twice, and Jacob Faust, Jacob Brown and Trey Morgan all doubled.

● Elgin also defeated Waynwsfield-Goshen 9-1 as Donaven Stith pitched a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts and three walks. Singling twice were Castillo, Askew and Brown, while doubling was Quinten Harrison. In a 13-0 win over Ridgedale, Harrison struck out seven, walked four and gave up three hits, while hitting three singles for three RBIs at the plate. Wood doubled, and Isler and Nash Lust singled twice.

● Elgin trailed 4-0 in the second inning but came back for a 7-5 victory over Ridgemont. Harrison knocked a three-run home run and a single, and Askew singled twice. Castillo walked three, struck out six and gave up six hits, while Brody Wood got the save over two innings, allowing a hit and two walks with two strikeouts.

● Pleasant's Mason Moore allowed six hits and no earned runs with three walks and four strikeouts in helping his team to a 5-4 win over River Valley. Owen Lowry doubled and singled, and Avery Hamper singled twice for the Spartans. For the Vikings, Leland Doubikin went 3-for-4 at the plate and struck out 10 with six hits and two walks in six innings on the mound.

● In a doubleheader, Pleasant dominated Fredericktown 11-0 in five innings in both games. In the first, J.T. Snively went four innings and gave up one hit, two walks and four strikeouts, while Lowry doubled and singled, and Cole Bailey singled twice. In the second one, Moore also pitched four innings, giving up three hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Singling three times was Snively, while singling twice was Trent Caudill. Moore and Logan Clemons tripled and Hamper doubled.

● During a 4-2 loss to Ontario where Pleasant was held to five hits, Lowry hit a home run and Snively gave up eight hits and two earned runs with no walks and two strikeouts. Pleasant knocked off Kenton 7-6 as Meade and Bailey doubled and singled, and Hamper singled twice.

● Northmor's Drew Hammond and Trevor Brubaker teamed for a four-hitter with two walks and nine strikeouts in a 12-3 win over Danville. Grant Bentley was 4-for-5 at the plate for the Golden Knights, while Hammond singled twice, and Nicholas Armrose and Bryce Cooper doubled and singled. Jack Bowdre and Brubaker each hit a double, too.

● In a 6-1 win over Danville, Brubaker went the distance, striking out nine, walking one and allowing six hits. Hammond homered and singled for three RBIs, while Cole Cuffman doubled twice and singled; and Armrose doubled and singled. In a 5-4 loss in eight innings to Fredericktown, Hammond and Bentley pitched for 12 strikeouts, seven walks, seven hits and one earned run after leading 4-2 late in the game. Hammond was 3-for-4 and Armrose doubled.

● Northmor ended the week with a 2-0 victory over Franklin Heights. Cooper, Cuffman and Bowdre combined for a one-hitter, striking out seven and walking three. There were only five hits in the game for both teams as Hammond doubled and Garrett Harvey singled twice.

● Marion Harding's Landon Adams hit a double and six other Prexies had a single in an 11-4 loss to Clear Fork. In a 6-4 loss to Shelby, Nathan Cunningham hit two solo home runs, while Austin Allen doubled and singled, and Gavyn Baumgartner singled twice.

● The Presidents topped Worthington Christian 10-4 as Ray J Scott-Harbolt and Allen struck out seven and allowed seven hits. Connor Pennington doubled and singled, and Cunningham singled twice for Harding.

● Shelby blanked River Valley 5-0 as the Vikings were limited to six hits. Layne Myers doubled, while Trace Kelly worked six innings, giving up five hits and a walk with a pair of strikeouts. In a 5-4 win over Madison, Hudson Pollock and J.R. Bates combined for a seven-hitter with no walks and a strikeout. Doubikin drove in three runs with two singles; Carter Park scored three times on two singles; Hayden Kanagy doubled and singled; and Hayden Foltz singled twice.

● Cardington got by East Knox 2-0. For the Pirates, A.J. Hall went six innings for three hits, a walk and one strikeout, and Caden DeWitt earned a save. Hall and Wyatt Wade each had two hits. The Pirates also slipped by Danville 3-1 with Merek McClure and James Fiant teaming for a three-hitter with no earned runs, eight walks and 10 strikeouts. DeWitt doubled in two runs, and the rest of the team had three singles.

● In a 3-2 loss to Centerburg, Wade pitched six innings with seven hits, three walks and 10 strikeouts for the Pirates, while Denton Garrison was 3-for-3.

● Shawnee edged North Union 2-1, holding the Wildcats to three hits. Tyler Krebehenne pitched for North Union, allowing six hits and three walks with four strikeouts. In a 9-0 loss to Jonathan Alder, Krebehenne had two of North Union's four hits.

● North Union stopped Cardington 4-2. For NU, Ashton Haubiel, Mason Bright and Krebehenne allowed seven hits with six walks and six strikeouts as Landon Converse singled twice. For the Pirates, Hall, McClure and Fiant allowed six hits, five walks and nine strikeouts as Hall Abner Edgell and DeWitt singled twice.

● Highland scored six runs in the sixth inning to pull away for a 10-0 victory over Galion. Hayden Kline had three hits, while Kort Sears, Rhett Russell and Gavin Wiggand all had two hits for the Scots. Zach Church went six innings with two hits, a walk and six strikeouts.

● In a 9-4 win over Lexington, Jayden Collins hit two singles and a double and pitched five innings with three hits and one run. Kline doubled as well. In a 16-0 win over Lucas, 10 Scots produced 14 hits led by three from Jace Brooks and two each from Collins and Wiggand. Hendrick Karya and a career-best four RBIs.

Track and field

● River Valley took fourth at the nine-team Gerald Swankhouse Invitational in Upper Sandusky. RV's Ethan Lyon swept the throws with a 53-feet, 2-inch toss in the shot put and a 165-0.5 in the discus. Cooper Miller was second in the pole vault at 13-0 and third in the 110-meter hurdles at 17.65 and 300 hurdles at 45.59. Gabe Douce was second in the 800 in 1:59.63 as was Chase Osborne in the 3,200 in 10:19.64 and Brady Cookson in the shot put at 42-4.5. Ben Isler was fourth in the pole vault at 10-6.

● North Union was fifth at the Upper Sandusky meet. Carter Skaggs won the 110 hurdles in 16.06, while Wyatt Davis was third in the long jump at 18-4, and Henry Hayward was third in the pole vault at 11-0.

● River Valley also competed in a six-way meet at Mechanicsburg. Winning in the discus was Lyon at 165-10 and shot put at 55-11.5. Miller also won the pole vault at 14-0. Douce and Osborne were runners-up in the 800 and 3,200 in 1:59.02 and 10:46.66, respectively. Cookson was second in the shot put at 44-4, and Jared Slone was third at 42-8.75.

● Highland was fifth at the 13-team Bloom-Carroll Invitational. Ladon Hayes was runner-up in the shot put and discus in 44-9 and 133-7. Toby Rogers was second in the 300 hurdles in 44.47 and fourth in the 110 hurdles in 17.09. Darren Styer won the pole vault at 10-6. Matthew Miller was second in the 3200 in 10:26.59.

● North Union track's Carter Skaggs won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.06 seconds at the Gerald Swankhouse Invitational in Upper Sandusky.

● River Valley track's Ethan Lyon swept the throws at the Gerald Swankhouse Invitational in Upper Sandusky, taking the shot put in 53-2 and the discus in 165-0.5.

● Winning last week's poll with 189 of 406 votes (47 percent) was Marion Harding baseball player Gavytn Baumgartner who pitched a four-hitter and added a double at the plate in a win over River Valley. Other nominees were Pleasant track's Hudson Warner, Elgin baseball's Brody Wood, Highland track's Ladon Hayes and Northmor track's Ryan Lehman.
