Boys Basketball: Quincy, Coldwater and Bronson falls, Union City takes win

QUINCY – In a culmination of Quincy’s annual Oriole Week, the Quincy varsity boys basketball team welcomed Big 8 conference foe Maple Valley to town for a night of action on the hardwood.

Quincy nearly led the entirety of the game, opening a 10-point lead at one point in the third quarter, however Maple Valley made a stunning comeback, stealing a win on the road as the Lions defeated Quincy 52-47.

Quincy raced out to an early lead thanks to some pinpoint shooting in the first quarter, leading 19-11 after one quarter of play. Maple Valley buckled down defensively and held Quincy to just three points in the second quarter, closing the score to within 22-19 at the break.

Quincy rode the hot hand of Brandon Miner to a huge third quarter as the Orioles outscored Maple Valley 20-15 to build a 42-34 lead after three quarters of play. Quincy had led 31-21 in the quarter, but an 8-0 run by the Lions closed the score to 31-29 with just over two minutes left in the third. Quincy then went on a tear of their own, outscoring Maple Valley 11-5 over the final two minutes of play to build the eight-point lead.

Maple Valley was not about to go away quietly however, opening the quarter with an 8-0 run to tie up the game at 42-42 with five minutes left.

Quincy looked to take back control with a three from Corey Turner, but a long and patient Maple Valley possession also led to a three, knotting the score up again at 45-45 with 2:41 left.

Maple Valley closed out the game with a 7-2 run to give the Orioles the heartbreaking 52-47 loss.

Quincy was led on the night by Brandon Miner who recorded a solid double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

Ryan Kempter just missed double digits with nine points, three steals and two assists while Grant Carter added seven points, four rebounds, four assists, and two blocked shots. Corey Turner chipped in with six points while Clayton Benson added six rebounds. Alex Dunn also added six rebounds to go with three points scored.

Quincy falls to 8-10 overall on the season and 3-6 in the Big 8 conference.

Coldwater falls on road to Parma Western

JACKSON – The Coldwater Cardinals fell to Parma Western in an Interstate 8 road battle Friday night by the score of 51-38.

Western opened an early lead they would never really look back from, leading 7-4 after one and 24-7 at the half.

The Panthers extended their lead to double digits at 38-26 after three quarters until the final score of 51-38.

Austin Downs led the Coldwater effort with 14 points, the lone Cardinal in double figures. Downs also added three steals.

Also adding to the Coldwater effort was Gavin Taylor with eight points; Niko Downs with eight points and three steals; Zach Coffing with five rebounds and four steals; Jackson Reilly with four rebounds; and Ayden Dirschell with four assists.

Coldwater falls to 6-14 overall on the season and 4-6 in the Interstate 8 conference.

Union City takes win, Bronson falls in Big 8 action

In Big 8 conference action, the Union City Chargers took a solid road win while Bronson dropped a tough home matchup.

At Reading it was Union City that took the road win over the Rangers by the score of 42-39.

At Bronson, it was the Vikings falling to an ever-improving Springport team by the score of 62-48.
