Bowman County, Hettinger-Scranton take straight-sets victories in volleyball

Sep. 18—BOWMAN COUNTY — This week looks to be a crucial seven days for many area volleyball squads, and the teams are starting to settle into particular stratas ... but many challenges await. This week will feature a ton of great action on the courts of Southwest North Dakota, with Tuesday, Sept. 19 offering a series of great options for fans.

The Dickinson High School Midgets have a Tuesday date with Watford City on the road, and meanwhile Hazen will head to Dickinson Trinity with Killdeer traveling to Richardton-Taylor in a Region 4 clash in Class B. Hettinger-Scranton is hosting Bison, South Dakota.

Currently, DHS sits in fourth-place in the West Region record in Class A behind first-place Bismarck High, Jamestown and Bismarck Century, respectively. Meanwhile, in Class B, Region 7, Dickinson Trinity is the overwhelming leader at 10-0 and a 4-0 record in the region. Beulah is in second-place in the region with Bowman County just behind them in third, while Hettinger-Scranton in at fourth, New England sitting at fifth and Killdeer rounding-out the top-6. Hazen, Heart River and Glen Ullin-Hebron ring in at the seven- through nine-positions and Mott-Regent completes the top-10.

For Tuesday's matchups, Central McLean will be at Flasher and Beulah will be at Beach to face the Buccaneers, while Center-Stanton heads to Glen Ullin-Hebron for another excellent game in Class B Region 7, and Grant County will be at New England on the same day. Bismarck St. Mary's will be at Mandan with Bismarck Legacy traveling around the corner to Bismarck for a 6 p.m. game, and another Bismarck matchup will feature Minot at Bismarck Century.

Last week on Thursday, Sept. 14, Bowman County turned in an excellent straight-sets win over Killdeer and evened their record at 6-6-1 on the 2023 season, winning the individual games by scores of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-10. Kennedy Senn led the way in kills with 8 for the Bulldogs and Claire Stafford had another outstanding performance with 7 kills a pair of digs and 3 blocks. Reagan Coyle dug out 13 shots on the defensive side of the net and Lucy Heyen had 11 digs on the night, while Ashlyn Fischer had 8 and Emberly Van Deale had 9. Sophia Headley led the way in assists with 20 and Alyssa Martian distributed 11.

Also on Sept. 14, Hettinger-Scranton earned a 3-0 win over Heart River at 25-16, 25-19, 25-21 as Chloe Geaumont led the way in assists with 26 and Sophia Kennedy notched a team-leading 15 kills. Laela Jensen contributed 9 kills for the Nighthawks. Defensively, Vanessa Oase had 4 blocks and Olivia DeFoe dug out an astounding 17 shots with Geaumont adding 9 each, along with Jensen.

For the Cougars, Molly Robb had 13 assists to lead the team, and Abby Talkington was the team-leader in kills with 7 and led the team in digs with 11.
