The 61st annual Times-News Open bowling tournament gets underway Saturday, and the Times-News will keep you informed with event coverage, features and results throughout the three-weekend event.

The tournament begins with the most bowlers ever — 182 — allowed to enter for qualifying Saturday and Sunday at Eastway Lanes, the largest alley in the Erie area. A record 40 bowlers will advance to the semifinals the following weekend.

Longtime Times-News/GoErie.com contributing writer Chuck Pora will be there for his 22nd year covering the T-N Open. Pora is a published author who is in his 50th year as a contributor for the Times-News.

Read Pora's preview Wednesday on GoErie.com and later this week in the Times-News. Check out his first-weekend wrap-up Monday and return for more tournament features before the semifinals Jan. 13 at Greengarden Lanes. Stay informed here ahead of the finals, which are set for Jan. 20 at Eastland Bowl and Jan. 21 at Rolling Meadow.

On the first day of qualifying, the Open will honor local bowling legend Buddy Malone, who recently died. Malone, who has a longevity award named in his honor, competed in a record 51 consecutive Times-News Opens.
