Body of Wyoming signee found after search off California coast

The body of a Wyoming signee who was presumed dead was found over the weekend.

Naphtali Moi Moi, whose legal name is Naphtali Finau, was boogie boarding off the coast in Poplar Beach, California, on April 18 when he was swept out to sea by a rip current. After searching through the following weekend, authorities said Moi Moi was presumed dead and suspended the search. He was 18.

Moi Moi’s body was spotted Sunday afternoon and he was identified by the San Mateo County Coroner on Tuesday. The coroner’s office said in a statement that the official cause of death was still being investigated.

His body washed up on the same beach near where he and his friends were boogie boarding. After he was swept away, Moi Moi’s friends saw him floating face down but were unable to get near him.

“We have been talking with Naphtali’s family and our hearts go out to the entire Moi Moi family at this extremely difficult time,” Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl said in a statement after the search was suspended. “As a Cowboy Football family, we are all thinking of and praying for Naphtali, his family and his friends.”
