BoCoPreps 10&10: Week 2

Dec. 11—Each full week of the winter season, BoCoPreps will highlight 10 teams and 10 athletes that had exceptional performances. While our staff will utilize multiple avenues to compile these lists, readers are encouraged to submit nominations to our email (results@bocopreps.com).

10 teams

Broomfield spirit: The Eagles finished second in the 4A/5A game day event at state championships at the Denver Coliseum, scoring 94.15 points. They took third in hip hop, scoring 90.025.

Erie spirit: The Tigers won the 4A cheer title for a sixth straight season and eighth all-time. Their score of 95.70 was more than six points better than second-place Lewis-Palmer and was the biggest margin of victory at the state championships.

Frederick girls' basketball: The Golden Eagles won three of four last week, beating Mountain View, Steamboat Springs and Highland by an average of more than 30 points per game. They fell to 6A Legend on Saturday.

Holy Family spirit: The Tigers took third in the 4A cheer event, finishing behind winner Erie and Lewis-Palmer at the state championships at the Denver Coliseum. They also took third in the 4A poms event, finishing with a score of 90.15, less than a point behind winner Roosevelt.

Lyons spirit: The Lions finished fourth in the 2A/3A game day event at the state championships at the Denver Coliseum, scoring 86.85 points.

Mead boys' basketball: The Mavericks won three of four last week, beating Lakewood Vista PEAK Prep and Monarch. They fell to southern-Colorado power Lewis-Palmer 60-57.

Niwot boys' wrestling: The Cougars finished fourth out of 14 teams at the 47th annual Frank Palmeri-Wheat Ridge Invitational. Ryder Evans (144-pound weight class) and Jonathan Lopez (285s) took home individual gold for them.

Prospect Ridge Academy spirit: The Miners took second in the 3A cheer event at the state championships at the Denver Coliseum, finishing behind Highland High School.

Silver Creek boys' basketball: The Raptors are 5-0 on the season after they beat Peak to Peak, Berthoud and Niwot last week. Ashoka Surkhang (15.2 PPG), Gabe Selby (15.2) and Luke Schmeeckle (14.5) have led the way in scoring.

Twin Peak Charter boys' basketball: The Timberwolves, following an 0-3 start to the season, won three straight last week. Chance Mueller is averaging 7.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Yannis Diby is at 6.5 PPG and 9.5 RPG.

10 athletes

Essynce Contreraz, Holy Family girls' basketball: The senior filled up the stat sheet in two wins last week for the Tigers (3-0). She scored a game-high 23 to go along with four boards, six assists and eight steals in a 73-42 win over Eaton Tuesday. She added four points, seven rebounds, six assists and another steal in a 56-50 win over Resurrection Christian Friday.

Andrew Effland, Broomfield boys' basketball: Averaging 17.8 points per game through four games, the junior had 53 points across three games last week in the Boulder Valley Invite. He had a career-high 21 points on 60% shooting in a 92-32 win over Wheat Ridge Saturday. Last year as a sophomore, Effland averaged 5.2 PPG.

Alexandra Eschmeyer, Peak to Peak girls' basketball: The junior has recorded a double-double in five straight games to open the season, the most in the state. She had three last week, including a monster 33-point, 16-rebound performance over Forge Christian Thursday. She also received offers from the University of Washington and the University of Pennsylvania, per club team Colorado Hoopsters.

Ellie Foulke, Broomfield girls' swimming: She won the 200-yard IM (2:13.43) and the 500 freestyle (5:17.84) at the Break the Ice Invite in Windsor Saturday. The Eagles finished second to Fossil Ridge in the team race.

Darby Haley, Mead girls' basketball: The junior scored 22 on 58% shooting in a 55-44 win over Erie Saturday. The Mavericks (4-1) have won four straight.

Breezy Johnston, Broomfield girls' wrestling: The freshman won the 125-pound bracket at the Poudre Shooting Stars Invite. She beat Poudre's Pearl Morris by a 9-1 major decision in the finals.

Josh Neely, Jefferson Academy boys' basketball: The junior flirted with a triple-double in a 66-43 win over Jefferson Wednesday, finishing with 10 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. The Jaguars are 4-0.

Savannah Pohl, Longmont girls' basketball: Pohl led the Trojans to two wins in three games last week. In the wins, she had 17 points and nine rebounds against Sand Creek and went for 10 and 10 against Summit.

Izzy Spagnoletti, Silver Creek girls' basketball: The junior is averaging 19 points through three games, the most PPG out of the teams in the 6A/5A/4A Northern Colorado Athletics Conference. She scored 21 on 50% shooting in a 46-35 win over Niwot Saturday.

Xavier Valentin-Bradford, Centaurus boys' wrestling: The senior won the 285-pound bracket at the Pueblo East Invitational Saturday, recording four pins, all inside 90 seconds.
