Bloyen, Pertler voted Volusia-Flagler midseason players of year for baseball, softball
The people have spoken. Atlantic’s Dom Bloyen and University’s Addison Pertler are the Volusia-Flagler midseason baseball and softball players of the year.
Online voting took place between Sunday, April 7, and Sunday, April 14. Bloyen claimed 40% of the ballots. Pertler collected 50%.
Bloyen has been instrumental in the Sharks’ turnaround from 2-21 last year to 9-9 this season.
At the time voting opened, the senior carried a .500 batting average. He has recorded hits in 17 of his 37 at-bats, bringing his average to .459 and on-base percentage to .556. He has scored 16 runs and knocked in 12 more, with 16 steals.
Bloyen has also tossed 10⅓ innings on the mound.
The Spruce Creek duo of junior Garrett Grant and junior Devon Crown followed Bloyen with 27% and 25% of the votes, respectively.
In nine of the Titans' 19 games, Pertler has registered multiple hits, shining against a handful of tough opponents.
The junior catcher went 4 for 5 against undefeated Eustis, had three hits with a pair of runs scored against Flagler Palm Coast and knocked in a pair versus Hagerty. In total, she sports a .452 batting average with five doubles, seven runs scored and 15 RBIs.
Behind the plate, Pertler has a .968 fielding percentage with five assists. She handles a pitching staff, anchored by Savannah Gaumont Lanvin and Olivia Boon, that has recorded a 4.47 ERA.
The softball runner-up was Matanzas' Leah Stevens, who garnered 42% of the votes.
The News-Journal will choose its players of the year at the end of the spring season and announce the winners at the Volusia-Flagler High School Sports Awards show on June 3.
