Bloomington area high school sports roundup for April 8-13

Here's what's happening on the Bloomington area high school sports scene for the week of April 8-13 with the eclipse blocking out all events on Monday and rain expected to do a number the rest of the week.

Saturday, April 13

Baseball

BLOOMINGTON NORTH 7-17, MARTINSVILLE 4-3: The Cougars (4-3) rolled to a sweep to stop a three-game skid. In the opener, Will Eads and Chris Barnett each drove in two runs and Ross Ogden and Liam Smith each had two hits for North. Jack Leonard struck out six over four innings while Ogden and Drew Wagner provided scoreless relief while giving up just one hit. In the six-inning nightcap, North battered the Arties (1-5) for 13 hits, going up 8-3 after one inning, then blowing it open in the fifth and sixth to end it early. Caden McCoy had two hits, including a homer and four RBI while Barnett was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Smith was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Eleven different Cougars scored as Martinsville committed seven errors. North pitchers fanned 11 as Brady Leonard got the win. Box scores at MaxPreps.

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 13-11, EAST CENTRAL 3-10: The Panthers (6-1) cruised behind a strong offense in Game 1 then needed it to pull out a rally in Game 2, blasting 15 hits. Collin Marcum got the win in the opener as Luke Arnett and Connor Osborne each homered. Tyler Morris got the W in the nightcap.

EASTERN GREENE ROUND ROBIN: The T-Birds (5-1) are still on a roll, getting past North Knox 14-10 and then dispatching winless Monrovia, 13-6. In the opener, Eastern jumped up 8-2, then gave up three in the fifth only to answer with six in the bottom half then held on. Jack Rees had a homer and three RBI. Nick Richey and Gavin Whitfield each drove in two. Freshman Chaz Perry got the win. Game 2 was tied at 5 after four but Eastern came up with four in the fifth and pulled away. Peyton Lewis had a homer and three RBI and Will Inman drove in three. Whitfield had three hits, two of them doubles. Ty McKnight got the win. Box scores at MaxPreps.

SHAKAMAK 13, OWEN VALLEY 3: It was just a 7-3 lead heading into the sixth when the Lakers broke it open and sent the Patriots (2-1) to their first loss of the season.

Boys track

BEN DAVIS RELAYS: Bloomington North won the team title at this event for the first time, nipping Center Grove 78½-78. The highlight was senior Jaidyn Johnson smashing his school record in the 100 again with an incredible 10.38. The state meet record is 10.31 from 1981. Johnson also anchored the 400 relay (James Bosco, Stephon Opoku, Joe Powell) to a 42.73 and a .01 win over Merrillville. The Cougars won the 3,200 relay (Dominic D'Onofrio, Reed Pierce, Jacob Mitchell, Caelan D'Onofrio) in 7:58.28 and the D'Onofrio brothers helped win the Giant Medley Relay in 5:44.0. The same foursome in the 400 relay was also on the second place 800 relay (1:30.01) and Johnson was also on thr runner-up 1,600 relay (3:23.61). North was fourth in the 4by1,600 relay and fifth in the Shuttle Hurdles Relay. Aden Pierce was third in the 1,600, Caleb Webb second in the 3,200. Softball

MOORESVILLE 4, BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 0: The 4A No. 6 Pioneers' pitching depth was evident as sophomore Aubrey Todd handcuffed the Panthers through six innings with just one hit. Mooresville (9-1) has used its top two arms in a conference doubleheader sweep of Decatur Central on Friday. But Kinsey Clopton kept it close for five innings, giving up a lone run in the top of the first. A couple of sharp defensive plays picked off two Mooresville base runners, but the Pioneers were still able to pad the lead with two runs in the sixth. Freshman Abby Purtlebaugh had the lone hit for South (4-3), which plays at No. 7 Center Grove on Monday.

EASTERN GREENE ROUND ROBIN: The T-Birds (1-5) picked up their first win of the year, topping Monrovia 5-4, then fell 13-0 to Martinsville on a no-hitter.

BEECH GROVE TOURNAMENT: Edgewood (5-4-1) opened with a 17-0 five-inning crushing of New Castle as Madi Bland knocked in seven runs with three hits, two double and a three-run homer. Kaylee Hawkins also drove in three runs and Piper Stephens was 4-for-4 as the Mustangs had 16 hits. Ally Bland fired a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts. The final was a 2-1 loss to the host Hornets, 2-1.

Boys' golf

EDGEWOOD INVITATIONAL: Brownstown Central (324) won the team title led by medalist Micah Sheffer (70). Edgewood (373) was sixth out of 14 teams while shorthanded Eastern Greene, missing several of its top golfers, shot a 418 and Owen Valley 427. Carter Cheaney's 88 and Calvin McDonald's 89 led the Mustangs. Roman Valentine had a strong 85 to finish in the top 15 to lead the T-Birds just 12 hours after competing in four events at the North Knox track invite. Jake Cuningham and Connor Deckard each had 107s in OV's first tourney of the season.

CENTER GROVE TROJAN CLASSIC: North shoots a 345 for 15th at Hickory Stick. Host Center Grove puts three teams in the top five, with the sixth-ranked varsity squad winning with a 297 to top No. 2 Guerin Catholic by four shots.

Girls' tennis

EDGEWOOD SWEEPS: The Mustangs (3-0, 2-0) pulled off a Western Indiana Conference sweep, beating West Vigo 3-2 and Northview 3-2. The big win against the Vikings came at No. 1 doubles, where sophomores Marley Jackson and Sophia Kapperman worked past Maddie Bradbury and Baylie Vester, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Against the Knights, it took two tough wins to pull it out as Jackson, playing 3 singles, rallied to beat Anna Keith 6-7(5), 6-3, (12-10). And at 1 singles, Macy Vaughn held off Martina Sutherland 7-5, 5-7, 6-1. Complete results at Edgewood Athletics.

Boys' track

FRANKLIN CENTRAL FLASHES MILE SHOWCASE: Martinsville's Martin Barco repeated, though not quite as fast as last year, with a 4:11.53 in the fourth and fastest heat of the boys mile to top Cameron Todd of Brebeuf Jesuit (4:13.01), the same order they finished in last year's 1,600 final at state. Todd was the state cross country champ. It was also a strong race for North as Jack Holden was fourth (4:15.59), Caleb Winders sixth (4:16.54) and Caelan D'Onofrio ninth (4:19.39). Places 2-8 came in within 4:83 seconds of each other with Floyd Central's Will Conway (state XC runner up, 4th in 3,200) fourth at 4:16.33 between Holden and Winders. In Heat 3, North's Jacob Mitchell was ninth in 4:29.69. In Heat 2, North's Dominic D'Onofrio was fifth (4:29.38) and South's Joe Zinkan was 17th (4:33.61). A 4:26.01 won it. In the first heat of the freshman boys mile, North's Jackson Walker was third by 1.13 seconds in 4:50.50. South had three under five minutes with James Rice eighth (4:55.70), Garrett Pitkin 14th (4:57.52) and Luke Reinhart 16th (4:58.40). South's 3,200 relay was 12th in Heat 2 in 8:41.51 Complete results at milesplit.com.

NORTH KNOX INVITATIONAL: Eastern Greene finished second at the nine-team meet with 104½ points with South Knox scoring 165 to win. T-Birds highlights included James Lewis winning the 100 (11.93) and 200 (23.16) and placing second in long jump (18-7½). Jade Dawes was second in 800 (2:11.29) and fourth in 1,600 (5:03.83). Brayten Enlow was third in 110H (18.34) while Roman Valentine was fourth in pole vault (10-0). The 1,600 relay of Lane Stephens, Maddox Ault, Valentine and Lewis won in 3:39.06. Girls' track

FRANKLIN CENTRAL FLASHES MILE SHOWCASE: A pair of freshmen dominated Heat 3 of the mile with Alica Friesen of Huntington North (5:07.79) holding off South's Lexi Kollbaum (5:08.85), which might be the fastest any Panther freshman has gone in the 1,600, converting to a 5:08.05. She ran a 5:13 in the season opener. Edgewood's Hannah Crain was 21st (5:30.30). In the fast heat (4), Delta's Nicki Southerland won in 4:50.80 as four got in under five minutes. North's Nola Somers Glenn was 23rd in 5:35.12.

NORTH KNOX INVITATIONAL: Eastern Greene was sixth out of 10 teams with 45½ points. Barr-Reeve won with a 142. Eastern saw Lilyanna Blais take second in the 1,600 (5:43.57) and fourth in the 400 (1:06.12) while Esther Crane won the 3,200 by over a minute in 12:24.23. Kena Maddox was fifth in the high jump and tied for sixth in pole vault. The T-Birds' 3,200 relay was third in 11:39.42 and the 1,600 relay was fourth in 4:45.40. Complete results at timingmd.net.

Softball

MARTINSVILLE 5, BLOOMINGTON NORTH 4: A run in the top of the seventh inning gave the Artesians (2-5) the road win. The Cougars (2-5) tied the game 4-4 with two runs in the sixth. Kendyl Feutz and Jocelyn Parrish each drove in two runs for North. Destiny Forler struck out 11 for Martinsville. Complete box at MaxPreps.

BEDFORD NORTH LAWRENCE 6, EDGEWOOD 2: Both teams had five hits but three unearned runs in the fifth broke it open. Mack Headdy had three hits for Edgewood (2-3), which was playing its first game in a week and got solid outings from four pitchers. Complete box at MaxPreps.

OWEN VALLEY 4, BLOOMFIELD 3: Patriots (2-0) get first win of the season.

TERRE HAUTE SOUTH 7, BLOOMINGTON NORTH 4: The Braves (4-0, 1-0) jumped on Caden McCoy for six runs in the third and hung on for the Conference Indiana win. North fell to 2-3, 0-1.

EASTERN GREENE 21, SOUTH KNOX 10: The T-Birds (3-1) trailed 5-0 after three innings before exploding, scoring seven in the top of the fifth and adding eight in the seventh. Gavin Whitfield was 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI. Rylin Patton had two hits and picked up the pitching win. Jack Rees had three RBI and Will Inman had two hits. Both teams had 11 hits but the T-Birds also drew 15 walks. Complete box score at MaxPreps.

Boys' golf

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 150, EDGEWOOD 184: An 18-hole match at Cascades was shortened to nine by the weather as the No. 2 Panthers prevailed. Carter Cheaney had a 44 and Mitch Deckard a 46 for the Mustangs, followed by Zayne Dwiggins 47, Calvin Mc Donald 47, Ean Connors 49, Hank Ripley 49 and Rhys Hatch 50.

Girls' tennis

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 3, BEDFORD NORTH LAWRENCE 2: Panthers (1-2) picked up their first win of the season.

Boys track

6-TEAM MEET AT EASTERN GREENE: Senior James Lewis set out to break several school records this season at got one, busting out a 10.97 in the 100 dash, snapping the old mark of 11.1. Team scores: BNL 102½, Eastern Greene 97½; Orleans 72, Bloomfield 36, Shoals 14, Lighthouse Christian 3. Complete results: Athletic.net.

Girls' track

6-TEAM MEET AT EASTERN GREENE: Eastern's Lilyanna Blais won the 1,600 and the 400 (1:03), while Clara Hawk won the 300 hurdles (53.90). Lighthouse's Marissa Webb took the 100 in 13.63. Team scores: BNL 150, Eastern Greene 101½, Orleans 55, Bloomfield 46½, Shoals 19, Lighthouse Christian 15. Complete results: Athletic.net.

Postponements

Bloomington South's baseball game vs. Terre Haute North and the softball game vs. Southport were both called off due to weather.

Three softball games were also halted before play could finish. Bloomington North led White River Valley 7-0 after three innings; Edgewood and Bedford North Lawrence were tied 5-5 in the sixth and Eastern Greene's game at North Knox was tied 0-0 in the third.
