Bloomington area high school roundup for Dec. 4-9

Saturday, Dec. 9

Boys' basketball

EDGEWOOD 67, BLOOMFIELD 50: The Mustangs (2-4) got off to another quick start and this time, followed through after taking a 17-6 lead. Edgewood led 34-22 at the half and 48-36 after three. Mialin White had 19 points, six rebounds and four assists for Edgewood, while Carson Huttenlocker had 16 points and five steals. Jacob Boggs had 11 points and Caden Jones 10 for the Mustangs, who went 12-of-12 at the line and hit nine 3s. Blake Neill had 27 for the Cardinals (2-3).

FRANKLIN CENTRAL 60, BLOOMINGTON NORTH 43: The taller, quicker Flashes jumped out to a 16-2 and never looked back, scoring 49 points in the paint or at the line, including their first 37. FC (2-3) led 27-15 at the break and 47-28 after three. Connor O'Guinn had 12 points and Luke Lindeman 11 for the short-staffed Cougars, who were missing Jalen Williams (illness) and Nemo Dangerfield (injury).

Girls' basketball

MOORESVILLE 59, BLOOMINGTON NORTH 38: The Pioneers (10-2) came out hot from the 3-point line and put the host Cougars (7-3) in 28-11 hole early in the second quarter and rolled to a sixth straight win. Mooresville had six 3s in the first half to North's one and took a 47-24 lead into the fourth. Mia and Ava Robbennolt had 12 points each while Ava Reitmeyer had 10.

SOUTHERN ROADS CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT: Lighthouse Christian won three games in one day to take the title. The Lions (8-4) opened with a 59-29 win over Cannelton at noon. Ellie Mae Winders had 21 points and Abagail Rousey 17. Then at 3, LCA took down Seven Oaks in the semis, 65-34. It was just 18-16 at the end of the first quarter before the Lions clamped down on defense to fuel and 18-4 run. Rousey had 19 points, Victoria Mann 14 and Winders 13. Olivia Easton had 10 for the Firehawks. And in the final, Lighthouse beat host Medora, 55-41. Rousey had 18 points (on 9-of-10 shooting), Winders 15, Mann 11 and Aleah Winders nine.

PAOLI 48, EDGEWOOD 18: Miserable shooting day dooms Mustangs (8-4) as Rams (4-6) jump up 12-3 and 22-6 by halftime as Edgewood hit just two field goals before the break. The starting five scored just 12 points as reserve Leia Frye led the way with 6. Carley Higgins had 23 to lead Rams.

Wrestling

ZIONSVILLE INVITATIONAL: Edgewood finished eighth our of eight teams with a limited lineup while taking on seven 4A sized schools, including Floyd Central, Zionsville, Garrett and Center Grove. But the Mustangs also came out with two champs and two runner-up finishes. At 120 pounds, John Orman went 4-0 with three pins, including one of 1:20 over No. 9 Tommy Frazier of Zionsville in the semis. He beat No. 15 Tony Kessenger of Floyd Central (who upset No. 13 Richard Rogers of Franklin Central in hi semi), to win the title with a 10-1 major. At 150, Michael Neidigh had three pins in 1:05 or quicker, then dispatched Moses Stephenson of Franklin Central, 17-9 major to the title. At 144, Joel Silvernail had two pins and a 4-1 win to make the final, where he was hurt and unable to finish his match to settle for second. At 157, Cayleb Stephens made it to the final but ran into Floyd Central's Noah Banet and was pinned in 1:22 to take second. Peyton Arthur (132), Christian Fields (190) and Trenton Fender (215) were seventh and Kamen Strunk was eighth at 285. Complete results at trackwrestling.com.

Boys swimming

SPEEDO JUNIOR NATIONALS EAST: The final day saw South's Lukas Paegle take 53rd in the 200 butterfly in 1:51.44 and 70th in the 100 freestyle in 45.91. South's David Kovacs was 20th in qualifying for the 200 backstroke in 1:46.34 to make the C Final. He went 1:46.02 for 21st.

Friday, Dec. 8

Boys' basketball

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 63, SOUTHPORT 55: Like most of the other 999, games No. 1,000 in JR Holmes' storied career as South's head coach was a win. The Panthers jumped up 16-2 thanks to a red-hot start by Vincent Moutardier and Zach Sims. That duo combined for nine 3-pointers and 47 points, with Moutardier hitting five from the arc for a career best 26 points. South (3-1) led 18-4 after one period and 34-23 at half. The lead was 56-42 before the Cards (1-3) made a run to within 59-53 with 30 seconds left after the Panthers missed some free throws and had a couple turnovers. Holmes now has 899 career wins overall heading into next Friday's home game vs. Terre Haute North. Check out the video highlights here.

BLOOMINGTON NORTH 79, MOORESVILLE 48: The Cougars were missing a starter (Jalen Williams) and a top reserve (Nemo Dangerfield) and never missed a beat as Connor O'Guinn splashed nine 3s for 27 points, both career bests, in the runaway road win. Luke Lindeman had 22 points. North was on target form long-range, hitting 15 of 27 3s for their first win of the season.

SOUTH VERMILLION 65, EDGEWOOD 52: Mustangs (1-4) stumble on the road to a potential sectional foe.

Boys swimming

SPEEDO JUNIOR NATIONALS EAST: South's Lukas Paegle tied for 17th in the prelims of the men's 100 butterfly in 48.28, just .10 off the school record, and earn a spot in the C Final. Times for the finals were not listed on the live timing website. Also in action was South's David Kovacs, who went 48.75 in the 100 backstroke prelims to take 21st and also make the C Final. He lowered his time to 48.65, just .11 off his school record, and was 18th.

Thursday, Dec. 7

EDGEWOOD 48, GREENCASTLE 22: Mustangs pick up eight wins, six by pin. 106: Halle Sanders, fft; 126: John Orman, p. 1:42; 144: Joel Silvernail, p. 3:53; 157: Michael Neidigh, fft; 175: Cameron Richardson, p. 2:35; 190: Christian Fields, p. :12; 215: Trenton Fender, p 2:39; 285: Kamin Strunk, p. 2:47. BLOOMINGTON NORTH 59, BEDFORD NORTH LAWRENCE 18: Cougars get another dual meet win.

Girls' basketball

EDGEWOOD 69, SOUTH VERMILLION 25: Mustangs (8-3) jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the first quarter and cruised home with a running clock most of the second half after going up 53-15 after three quarters. Macey Crider and Ava Laroche had 12 points each as all 15 Mustangs played and set a season high for points, scoring their most in a game since February of 2012.

EASTERN GREENE 52, BLOOMFIELD 37: Keylee Hudson had 25 points as the T-Birds (6-3, 2-1) slowly pulled away to the SWIAC road win. Eastern led 24-17 at half and 36-26 going into the fourth. Melanie Wyatt had eight points and Mallorie Elliott seven for EG.

CENTER GROVE 55, BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 24: The 4A senior-laden No. 6 Trojans (10-1) scored the first 11 points and never looked back, leading 27-11 by halftime. CG kicked in its transition game in the third to put it away with an 18-10 run. Rachel Wirts led CG with 14 points while Audrey Annee and Aubrie Booker had 12 each. Violet Hall and Julia Lashley had five points each to lead Panthers (5-4).

Boys' swimming

South's David Kovacs and Lukas Paegle and North's Jay Stewart are competing in the USA Junior Nationals East meet in Columbus, Ohio. Kovacs was 54th in the 200 IM (1:50.80) and Stewart was 120th in the 50 free (21.42). The meet will run through Saturday.

SOUTH PUTNAM 151, EDGEWOOD 103, WEST VIGO 16: Mustang boys get first win of the season.

Girls' swimming

SOUTH PUTNAM 134, EDGEWOOD 128, WEST VIGO 62: Mustangs fall in three-way meet.

Tuesday, Dec. 5

Girls' basketball

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 52, MARTINSVILLE 37: And up and down road game for the Panthers (5-3) who pull it out with a strong effort on defense in the second half, capped by an 11-2 finish in the fourth quarter. South led 18-8 after one quarter only to see Artestians lead at halftime, 24-22, before South took control again with a 20-point third quarter. Julia Lashley had 15 points and Abbie Lucas and Audrey Craft 14 each.

EASTERN GREENE 55, BROWN COUNTY 53: Eastern did it again. After another slow start, the T-Birds trailed 27-12, but stormed back in the second half like they've done a few times before this season to knock off the Eagles (4-3). Keylee Hudson had 20 or her 24 points in the second half rally. Melanie Wyatt had 11 points and Bianca Wyatt nine as the T-Birds (5-3) played without usual starter Mallorie Elliott.

LIGHTHOUSE CHRISTIAN 55, PROVIDENCE CRISTO REY 1: Abagail Rousey had 16 points and Naomi Connell and Ellie Mae Winders eight each for Lions (5-4), as the Wolves, struggling to rebuild their program, suffer a 37th straight loss. Only point came in the first quarter.

BLOOMINGTON NORTH 56, OWEN VALLEY 39: Cougars (7-2) make it six straight heading to a big home game Saturday afternoon vs. Mooresville (8-2). OV falls to 4-7.

Girls' swimming

BLOOMINGTON 108, EDGEWOOD 67: South winners were Harper Eakin (200 free), Anna Asplund (IM), Abigail Smith (50 free), Nia Johnson (diving), Lucy Tait (100 free), Coral Bumbalough (500 free), Kate Seidenfaden (back). The Panthers swept the relays. Edgewood winners were Ellie Vagedes (fly) and Ellis Lewis (breast).

Boys' swimming

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 107, EDGEWOOD 45: South swept every event, David Kovacs (200 free), Noah Simon (IM), Kian Kadlec (50 free), Hyun Kim (diving), Botand Kun (fly), Lukas Paegle (100 free), Tyler Peterson (500 free), Quinn Pleskac (back), Leo Nelson (breast), along with a sweep of the relays.
