Baseball

BLOOMINGTON NORTH 3, NORTHVIEW 0: Cougars had to scratch and claw on offense in the opener, but the pitching was near perfect as Caden McCoy, Jack Leonard, Rylan Sullivan, Drew Ogden (W) and Drew Wagner (save) combined on a one-hitter with one walk and 11 strikeouts. North scored a run without a hit in the fifth to break the ice and Case Davis had a solo homer to make it 3-0 in the sixth.

BLOOMINGTON NORTH 8, SHAKAMAK 5: Cougars (2-0) used a three-run first and a five-run third to go up 8-3 and hung on. Starter Cole Grupenhoff had a rough outing in his first start but Brady Leonard and Graham Freund tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings and Luke Freel picked up the save. Will Eads and Joe Burton each drove in two for North.

LOOGOOTEE 6, EASTERN GREENE 3: A four-run fifth broke a 2-2 tie for the Lions in Eastern's season opener on the road. Rylin Patton was 2-for-3 and Nick Richey had his first varsity hit and RBI. Complete box at MaxPreps.

HOOSIER CLASSIC

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 14, GREENWOOD 2 (5 inn.): The Panthers jumped all over shorthanded Greenwood, missing two of its top players, scoring eight runs in the first and six in the second. Woodmen pitchers walked 13. Collin Marcum got the win in his debut. Connor Osborne and Luke and Jake Arnett all had two RBI each. Complete box at MaxPreps.

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 10, EVANSVILLE CENTRAL 9 (9 inn.): Luke Arnett's basesloaded single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Panthers a crazy and improbable win. South rallied from down 5-0 behind some strong relief pitching by Xavier Hemingway and took the lead, 7-5 in the fourth, only to see the Bears tie it in the fifth. The adventure was just beginning. In the bottom of the sixth, three hit batters loaded the bases for the Panthers, who couldn't score. In the top of the seventh, the Bears loaded the bases with one out but reliever Teddy Kroeger came on to shut the door. Then South thought it had won it in the seventh after two singles and an intentional walk loaded the bases for Ben Ridner who lofted a sac fly to right. But a joyous Luke Thompson failed to step on the plate, Central noticed and the double play ended the inning. In the ninth, EC put a walk, two singles, a sac fly and a successful squeeze play together for a 9-7 edge. But South wasn't done as Connor Osborne smashed a two-run triple with one out. The Bears intentionally walked two and set up five infielders in front of Arnett, who found the gapping hole in center, and yes, Osborne made sure to touch home plate to make it official. Osborne and Lucas Waldon each had three hits and three RBI and Sam Giles had three of South's nine steals. The Bears hit six batters.

EDGEWOOD 10, NORWELL 2: The Mustangs took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth and broke it open thanks to a grand slam by Brayden Ault. Carson Druckrey gave Edgewood five strong innings, with Ziggy Teran finishing up, holding Norwell to two hits, a solo homer off each hurler. Druckey struck out nine. A five-run fourth put Edgewood up, capped by a two-run single from Andrew Good.

NEW PRAIRIE 5, EDGEWOOD 4: New Prairie stunned the Mustangs (2-1) with a three-run top of the seventh.
