Daniel Alfredsson completes his short victory lap with Ottawa

Former Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson has his 'drop the mic' moment on Thursday night against the Islanders at Canadian TIre Centre. And what a long moment it was ... taking warmups in his familiar No. 11 jersey with the 'C' on the front.

He got the red carpet treatment -- literally onto the ice -- and then addressed the crowd and had a ceremonial puck drop with current Sens captain Erik Karlsson. Notes the CP's Stephen Whyno, the Islanders were not on the ice at all, clearly giving Alfredsson his moment to shine.

His final lap was to U2's "Beautiful Day" ... which is kinda cheesy and cool at the same time.

Check out Alfredsson's speech ... short, succinct and to the point. As retirement speeches go this one is solid.

Pretty neat that his kids were all wearing Karlsson jerseys, but his wife was backing her husband with an Alfredsson jersey. Whether this was planned or not, it showed that the torch had indeed been past to some degree.

There were more tear-jerking type moments that you can watch below, in the entire tribute published on the Senators website. It's over 12 minutes long, but if you're a Senators fan, or just a fan of classy NHL dudes, it's totally worth it.

It's quite fascinating to see how this all worked out. After all, Alfredsson and the Senators did not exactly part on the best of terms, with the franchise leader in games and points playing his last season in Detroit.

Cheers Alfie, and congrats on a solid career.
