Iowa State honoring legend of Jack Trice with throwback uniforms against Iowa
Iowa State plans to wear throwback uniforms Sept. 14 for its game against in-state rival Iowa.
Reading descriptions of the uniforms can conjure some scary images considering these throwbacks are inspired by those from the 1920s, but photos published on www.cyclones.com show they're actually not bad.
If you were hoping for leather helmets, you will be disappointed.
The uniforms feature vertical stripes on the front with white jersey numbers. The jersey numbers are gold on the back and also appear on the cardinal colored helmets.
The Cyclones will wear gold pants with cardinal socks and gold stripes.
The only other time the Cyclones have worn throwbacks in their history, they beat the Hawkeyes in 2007 commemorating the program's 30-year anniversary of its Peach Bowl appearance.
Why are Cyclones are reaching all the way back to the 1920s? That is when ISU legend Jack Trice made history as the first black player for the school. The stadium the Cyclones call home in Ames, Iowa, is named after Trice who died from injuries he sustained in a game at Minnesota.
Iowa State plans to auction off the uniforms before the game and winners will receive the uniform some time after the game is played.
