Johnny Damon returning to Captain Caveman bearded look?

LAKELAND, Fla. — I arrived at Tigertown a little too late to make the clubhouse rounds, but MLive luckily had my back when it came to one of my burning questions.

Might Johnny Damon(notes) return to the beard that made him a household name in Boston, now that he's out from under the Yankees' clean-cut requirements?

According to the Idiot himself, that's a probable yes.

Here's what Damon told 97.1 The Ticket:

"You will probably see the beard, but it might take the whole season for the hair to grow back. I went into the offseason not knowing if I had to keep my hair short, but I can pull out a wig. "

Look closely at the picture on the right and it's clear that Damon is enjoying his newfound 'free to be me' status in the Motor City. That's definitely a good crop of stubble there and it makes me think we should run a regular feature tracking the beard's growth and progress.

Whether or not Damon feels compelled to grow the beard after seeing Jayson Werth's lumberjack look is another question for another time. But I don't think there's any doubt that his old look will play well in Detroit. Throw a flannel shirt on that guy and give him a pair of protective goggles and he'd fit in on any automotive assembly line. Tigers fans will like that.
