Bills assistant Cory Harkey interviews for Panthers’ special teams job

The Carolina Panthers have reportedly interviewed Buffalo Bills assistant special teams coach Cory Harkey for their vacant special teams coordinator position.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, as of Jan. 29, the interview has already taken place.

Harkey, 33, has only spent time at the NFL level as a coach with Buffalo. The Bills hired him in February 2022 when Matt Smiley was promoted to the coordinator role.

Harkey played in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams from 2012 to 2016.

In his career, Harkey had 27 catches for 215 yards and three touchdowns. However, his bigger contributions came via special teams.

In Harkey’s five years in the NFL, four of those saw him play in more than half of the Rams’ special teams snaps each season. In the early days of Pro Football Focus, the analytics named him an All-Pro special teamer in 2014.

Prior to coaching with the Bills, Harkey was a tight ends coach at Azusa Pacific University. He also went on to Tennessee State University in 2021 for the same role.
