‘We have the best vets’: Tyrese Maxey credits vets, others for success

When it comes to playing time, Tyrese Maxey has played sporadically this season but the Philadelphia 76ers rookie always seems to find a way to contribute when his number is called upon.

On Wednesday, Maxey produced 14 points, three rebounds and three assists off the bench during a 116-113 loss to the Phoenix Suns. He converted on 5-of-11 shots from the field in 31 minutes, his largest body of work since playing 36 minutes on Jan. 12.

With Ben Simmons out, and George Hill playing in just his second game with the Sixers, Maxey was counted on heavily. He played all 12 minutes in the fourth quarter and made several key plays down the stretch of the tightly-contested matchup.

Maxey credited several members of the Sixers for helping him stay ready, including his veteran teammates.

We have, I say, the best vets in the league. You have superstars like Ben and Joel (Embiid), even Tobias (Harris), in my opinion. Tobias didn’t play much (early in his career), and now he is where he is. You have Danny Green (who) has the same kind of story and also has three rings. Dwight (Howard) has been a superstar, now is a role player on a really good team; he won a championship. They say it takes a village to raise a child so I think that’s the little model that we can go with.

When fully assembled, the 76ers often rely on their veteran cast to play on a nightly basis. However, Maxey has proven several times this season to be capable of contributing when needed off the bench and that experience should only help the team moving forward.
