Best quotes from Colorado’s fall sports media day

On Friday, media members heard from Colorado football, volleyball and soccer players/coaches at the 70th annual CU fall sports media day. Each of the team’s representatives talked about their expectations for the upcoming season and what they’re looking forward to this fall.

As you’d expect, this year’s event had a different energy to it with Deion Sanders now leading a resurgent Buffs football program. Coach Prime, who entered the room riding his personalized segway, was once again enthused about how his team is coming together ahead of his first season in Boulder.

Below are some of the best quotes from Friday’s fall sports media day:

“Every position group has taken leaps and bounds. The kickers probably remain to be the same. We may have one or two additions, long snappers or whatever, backup punters or whatever. But that’s pretty consistent. Every position has really been enhanced. I feel like we’ve gotten better tremendously all over the board.”

“I don’t care about culture. I don’t even care if they like each other, I want to win. I have been on some teams where the quarterback didn’t like the receiver but they darn sure made harmony when the ball was snapped. And we’re not like that, trust me, these kids are very fond of one another.”

“Every time we step on the field I go out there with a purpose and make sure we can control the controllables, make sure everybody’s mindset and everybody’s mentally in the right place when we go on the field. That’s all it is. We’ve already done the physical part this summer, so now the receivers (are) seeing what I’m seeing.”

“Everything I’ve been through, coming from South Carolina, moving to safety, that was really my time to learn defense and concepts. I think the coaches out there who taught me the basics of playing safety, I took that to Jackson State, got my flag down there and here I’m just putting everything together.”

“We brought pretty much a whole new set of O-line guys. A couple of us guys stayed: “Bam” (Van Wells), me, Carter Edwards. We have some old guys, but a lot of us are pretty new. It’s pretty cool to see how we’ve been meshing together and (we’ve) became a pretty tight-knit unit so far, even though a lot of them got here in the summer or got here in the spring and we haven’t had that much time.”

“I feel really good and I’m feeling really confident and explosive. I’m just ready to get back out there, honestly. It feels good to be back in the football atmosphere again. It’s been so long since I’ve played.”

“It feels good to stay here and be a part of something. I mean it’s crazy to be a part of something like this. It was a big challenge coming in and obviously challenging everyone who was here at the time to fight for what they wanted and fight to be here and fight to be a part of this. When he (Deion Sanders) said, ‘We’re coming,’ I went home and on my mirror, I wrote down ‘Let them come.’ I wrote down the names of all the guys I have to compete against and I put my name up there, too, and made sure that I beat myself every day and worked hard because I truly desire to be here and contribute to this team and give back to this team and this university.”

“It’d be huge for me. I’m not entirely focused on that right now. I’m just trying to do what I can to help the team win in whatever position that is, whether that’s on special teams, running back or wherever.”

“A lot of exciting plays. Weaver is a playmaker. He got great YAC (yards after catch). He’ll go over the top of your head and dunk on you like it’s basketball. Weaver makes unbelievable catches. You’ll see stuff that you’ve never seen.”

“I think part of me is sad because we really enjoyed our time in the Pac-12. But part of me is really excited because the Big 12 is a great conference and it’s going to be something new and interesting for us as well. The Big 12 was the No. 1 RPI conference last year and had a national champion come out of it, so it’s not like it’s a step down in any way. It’s it’s going to be great volleyball and great competition.”

CU soccer midfielder Amaya Gonzalez on lights being installed at Prentup Field

“I think it’s really exciting. We’ve been taught talking about getting lights at our field for a very long time. It’s a little disappointing when we have afternoon games and a lot of fans can’t make it. But now that we have our lights, we have our stands, we have our benches, I think it’s going to be a new and better experience for our team going forward this season.”
