Who are the best girls lax teams in RI? Here's how Eric Rueb ranked them after Week 2

Things are starting to get fun.

Two weeks into the 2024 RIIL Girls Lacrosse season we’re starting to see who is who, but outside of Division I there isn’t a slam-dunk favorite in sight.

Things should get even better during spring break. While there aren’t a ton of games, there are a few matchups between early-season favorites that should help generate talk about who can and can’t win titles this spring.

The Providence Journal wants to report on these games – all of them – but we need help from the state’s girls lacrosse coaches.

What do we need? Scores and stats.

Reporting lacrosse scores is as easy as it gets. All we need is the final score, three players to highlight from the winning team, two from the losing team and any detail – like a game-winning goal or big play – that might help our writeup.

Home team coaches are responsible for reporting scores. They can be called it at 401-277-7340 or emailed to PJSports@ProvidenceJournal.com by 10 p.m. the night of games. That’s not 10:15 p.m. or 11 p.m. or 9 a.m. the following morning.

This week’s going to be a fun one, so get things started right and see how we’ve ranked the top teams in each division heading into Week 3.

Kennedy George and Prout team have reason to celebrate after the start they've gotten off to.

1. Moses Brown (5-0 Division I)

The Quakers are a wagon. They outscored South Kingstown and Lincoln School 44-2 last week and its really tough to see any team slowing them down anytime soon. Moses Brown has one league game during spring break, hosting La Salle on Tuesday and expect the Quakers to try to maintain the level of play they’ve had so far this season.

2. Prout (3-1 Division I)

Last week was a big test for the Crusaders and they passed with flying colors, besting Barrington in overtime on Monday before beating Portsmouth on Thursday night. The pieces are in place for this to be a special season for Prout, but it can’t get complacent. The Crusaders will have a tough home match Monday against East Greenwich as their lone game during break.

3. La Salle (3-1 Division I)

It’s time to give the Rams their due. La Salle picked up two wins this week, including a thrilling one-goal victory over East Greenwich last Thursday. The Rams are a one-goal loss to Prout away from being undefeated, but this week will show us just good they are. Tuesday La Salle travels across the city to take on Moses Brown before playing on the road vs. Lincoln School Thursday.

4. Portsmouth (2-2 Division I)

One tough loss shouldn’t disrupt the Patriots’ start to the season. Losing to Prout last Thursday gives Portsmouth a chance to reset and continue to grind as it tries to be a title-game contender. The schedule is light for the Patriots this week, but they can’t afford to slip up when they travel to take on South Kingstown on Friday.

Percolating: Barrington (1-2 Division I)

Expect to signs like this a lot as North Kingstown gets going in D-II.
Expect to signs like this a lot as North Kingstown gets going in D-II.

1. Chariho (3-0 Division II)

Play the song. The Super Chargers’ offense continued to cook last week with a 19-8 win over Cumberland and if they keep scoring at this pace, they’ll be just fine. This week will be no vacation, but at least Chariho will get to stay home. The Chargers host Burrillville on Monday and then welcome Cranston West on Friday morning.

2. North Kingstown (1-0 Division II)

Pretty good start to the season for the Skippers, who trounced Smithfield, 18-5 in their season opener. NK’s next goal is to ride momentum from the win and get better, because the meat of th4 schedule is coming after spring break. The Skippers lone game this week takes place Thursday when it hosts Toll Gate.

3. Burrillville (1-0 Division II)

After graduating as many senior as they did, this was supposed to be a down year for the Broncos – but it didn’t start that way with a 15-4 win over Mt. Hope. Burrillville will be busy this week, playing two league games and a non-league tuneup. The games that count take place Monday at Chariho and Friday at home against Middletown, but Wednesday’s matchup against Wheeler should prove helpful.

4. Toll Gate (1-0 Division II)

Not much separates teams outside of the top three, so it’s time to credit the Titans after they won their home opener over rival Pilgrim and give them the No. 4 spot. Toll Gate will have to stay locked in Tuesday when it hosts Mt. Hope, but Thursday’s game at North Kingstown will tell us just who these Titans actually are.

Percolating: Cumberland (2-1 Division II), Cranston West (0-0).

Gianna Falcone and Westerly are flying high this spring, but Tuesday will be a tone-setter for the season.
Gianna Falcone and Westerly are flying high this spring, but Tuesday will be a tone-setter for the season.

1. Westerly (5-0 Division III)

In the preseason we told you how the Bulldogs put together a winning program and so far, they’re showing it works. Westerly is dominating everyone it plays right now, but faces its biggest test this week. Tuesday the Bulldogs travel north for their lone game of the week to play defending D-III champ Bay View in the biggest game of April.

2. Bay View (3-0 Division III)

Remember last season when the Bengals had a bumpy start to the season before rolling to the D-III title? That’s not how 2024 has started and Bay View looks very intent on winning another title. The Bengals can send a message Tuesday when they host Westerly, but they’ll have to maintain focus to close the week at Cranston East.

3. Narragansett (3-1 Division III)

The Mariners came away with a tough win over East Providence before rolling Mount St. Charles, giving them three straight wins since their season-opening loss to Westerly. Narragansett is a considerable threat to the top two teams and will only get better as the season goes on. The Mariners have one game this week, hosting Providence Country Day on Friday.

4. Mount St. Charles (1-2 Division III)

Thursday’s loss to Narragansett wasn’t how the Mounties wanted to end the week, but they should still be looked at as a bona fide title contender. Mount – which did the right thing and moved up a division after winning a title last year – will have a week to tighten things up before coming back from break to a three-game week.

Percolating: East Providence (2-2), Ponaganset (2-2).

Really need to find a 2022 Lincoln lacrosse roster to see if any of the players we photographed then are still on the team.
Really need to find a 2022 Lincoln lacrosse roster to see if any of the players we photographed then are still on the team.

1. Lincoln (4-0 Division IV)

How did the Lions jump into the top spot? Playing games helped. Lincoln’s two wins last week earned it the No.1 spot, but the next two weeks will tell if it deserves it. Tuesday is the big one, as the Lions host Scituate in a game that will help give us an idea about what D-IV really is. Lincoln closes the week with a road game against Coventry Thursday.

2. North Smithfield (2-0 Division IV)

There’s a good chance the Northmen are still the best team in D-IV, but they didn’t play last week so they slide a spot for the rankings. North Smithfield will probably remain in this spot for at least another week, as spring break gives them plenty of time to practice but no games to play.

3. Tiverton (2-1 Division IV)

It’s been an interesting start to the season for the Tigers, who put a good win on their resume as well as a good loss and then took care of North Providence in their only game last week.  Tiverton plays one game this week, hosting Coventry, before getting back into the thick of the season after spring break.

4. Scituate (0-1 Division IV)

Having played only one game its hard to judge the Spartans, but that one game happened to be a close loss to Tiverton, so this is probably a good spot for them for now. Scituate will have to shake off the rust this week, playing at Lincoln Tuesday. When the Spartans return from break, they’ll really start playing and that’s when we’ll find out just who they are.

Percolating: Classical (1-1), North Providence (1-3).
