Belcher leads Windthorst to convincing district win over Haskell

WINDTHORST – Windthorst freshman signal caller Brock Belcher is going to be a problem for opposing defenses for years to come.

The young phenom accounted for 287 yards of total offense, going 16 for 20 through the air for 230 yards and four touchdowns while adding 57 yards on the ground on seven totes as the Trojans pulled away for a 47-7 win in their district opener at Trojan Field.

Even more impressive than the young QB was the Trojans’ defensive front seven. Windthorst (3-1) held Haskell (0-4) to negative-15 yards rushing on 23 carries and limited the passing game to 117 yards in the contest.

“It was one of those days where everything we had was going right for us,” Trojans head coach Chris Tackett said. “We weren’t making many mistakes. When you get on a roll like that, you just try to ride it on in. It’s always good to start off district with a win. You try to help yourself out with playoff seeding and go from there.”

Windthorst receiver Kasen Wiles had a breakout performance for the Trojans, registering eight grabs for 142 yards and two scores while also pouncing on a loose ball in the endzone for a third score early in the third quarter.

After both sides battled to a 0-0 deadlock for most of the opening quarter, Windthorst was content to play for field position against the Indians. The Trojans continually backed up the Indians to force punts from deep in their own territory and set the offense up on the plus side of the field.

Cash Armstrong plunged into the endzone with 42 seconds to play in the opening quarter, starting a string of five straight scoring drives by the Trojans to end the first half.

After the Armstrong score, Windthorst elected to use a timeout on defense to force the Indians to punt into the wind that ultimately was the turning point in the contest.

Belcher logged scoring tosses of 5, 5, 10 and 50 in the second quarter to Jaxon Stark, Brayden Berend and Wiles (twice), respectively, as the Trojans poured it on for a 34-0 lead at the break.

The Indians were limited to just six first downs in the contest and finished 2-for-13 on third down.

Indians quarterback Haegen Pinkerton finished 6-of-21 through the air with a touchdown and an interception. Pinkerton connected with Nemo Silvas for a 45 yard score with 6:18 left in the contest to break up the shutout in what was the lone blemish of an otherwise dominant evening for the Trojans defense.

Windthorst closes out its non-district slate next week against Bremond in Weatherford. Haskell hosts Petrolia next Friday in 7-2A DII action.
