Young wrestlers help Grand Ledge win district title, end 37-year Holt streak

HOLT ― While the Grand Ledge wrestling team may be young, Logan Tollison knows there's plenty of talent around him.

And that's what led the sophomore and returning Division 1 state qualifier to believe the Comets could find success as a team this winter and in the seasons to come.

What Tollison envisioned has transpired with Grand Ledge capturing a Division 1 district championship Wednesday at Holt Junior High School.

The Comets recorded a 59-18 victory over Jackson in the championship match to move on to next week's regional. The district title was the first for Grand Ledge since 2021.

"We've been building over the last few years," Grand Ledge coach Mark Buckland said. "We have a young team. We do a great job in the room. We have a great coaching staff and a great group of kids. It's nice to come to Holt and win a championship on their grounds."

On its way to the title, Grand Ledge ended Holt's streak of 37 consecutive district championships with its 54-23 semifinal win. The Comets had their season ended last year by Holt with a 59-9 loss in the district.

"It's really crazy," Tollison said of ending that long streak. "It's mind-blowing.

"Last year we only scored nine points on Holt in districts and we completely changed that."

The Comets' young talent played a big role. Sophomores Tollison (215 pounds) and Even Abdo (120) and freshmen Sam Steinacker (190), Jackson Brown (113) and Ashton Delaney (165) each won both of their matches.

In the district final, Grand Ledge got wins by fall from freshmen Timothy Hubert, Jack Bull and Maddoc Taszreak, senior Jordan Lam, junior Jacob Crofut Steinacker and Abdo while winning the championship.

The contributions he and other young wrestlers had Wednesday and throughout the season has Tollison encouraged for what's ahead for the Comets.

"We're a young team and I feel like we've got a lot going for us in the future," Tollison said.
