Bedford uses full roster in boys lacrosse victory over SMCC

TEMPERANCE – Bedford has a massive roster of 35 players for its boys lacrosse team.

The Mules decided not to field a junior varsity team this spring. That led to the big varsity roster.

That can be a problem since only 10 can pay at a time.

Many of the Bedford players didn’t see action in the team’s 9-8 season-opening overtime victory over Tecumseh.

That’s why Mules coach Steve Ullery was thankful for Friday’s 17-3 win over St. Mary Catholic Central.

It gave him a chance to spread playing time around.

Cameron Barber led the offense with four goals and an assist while Blake Dlugosielski, Jalen Porter and Brennan McIntire netted three goals each.

McIntire was credited with five assists and Dlugosielski three.

Other goals came from Wyatt Koenig, Aide DePue, Thomas Yockey and Landon Maly.

“It was an opportunity to get all of our guys in,,” Ullery said. “It was fun all around.”

It was fun despite cold, wet, windy weather.

“Honestly, we were not surprised by the weather,” Ullery said. “We’ve practiced all spring in that kind of weather. As long it’s not thundering and lightning, we don’t care about the temperature or precipitation.

“The wind died down in the second half. It was actually pretty nice.”

With the way things were going for Bedford, the Mules probably didn’t notice the weather very much.

“It was our second game of the season,” Ulery said. “We were coming off a great victory over Tecumseh. Coming into the SMCC game, we were pumped up and ready to go.”

SMCC, which was missing four starters because of illness, got three goals from Paul Laboe.

“I can’t say enough about the team’s heart,” SMCC coach Frank Giarmo said. “They never stop playing hard even being down a lot early.

“We are a younger team this season, but we are improving each day.”
