NC State's Dave Doeren tells Steve Smith to 'kiss my (butt)' after beating Clemson

North Carolina State football coach Dave Doeren took a shot Saturday at Steve Smith Sr., the celebrity guest picker on ESPN's "College GameDay."

Steve, a 16-year NFL veteran and former Utah Utes standout (hence his appearance on Saturday's show, live from Salt Lake City) referred to the Wolfpack as a "basketball school," picking them to lose to Dabo Swinney's Clemson team. Doeren took that personally after his program upset the Tigers 24-17 at home on Saturday.

"Tell Steve Smith in the studio this ain't a basketball school, he can kiss my ass," Doeren said in an on-field postgame interview with the CW Network.

In Doeren's postgame press conference, he explained why he said what he said:

"For a guy that lives in Charlotte, clearly he's got his head faced west to Utah all the time," Doeren said of Smith, who played for the NFL's Carolina Panthers from 2001-13. "... He disrespected our program. I'm not gonna let people do that.

"These kids have worked their butt off. We've won a lot of football games here and in my tenure here, I think we're second or third in the ACC in wins in football. So, he can take that and put it where it belongs. But this is not a basketball school. This is a great, great school, it has great sports and football's one of them. If he wants to come see me, we can talk about that, but do your homework before you start talking shit."

The Wolfpack (5-3, 2-2 ACC) held a 24-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter against Clemson and held on to win despite allowing 10 unanswered points late in the game. Sophomore quarterback MJ Morris completed 11 of 20 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

Doeren is in his 11th season with NC State and is now tied with Earle Edwards for the most wins by a head coach in program history (77) after Saturday's win. Last season, the Wolfpack debuted at No. 22 in the first College Football Playoff rankings before finishing 8-5 and falling to Maryland in the Duke's Mayo Bowl.

Smith is now an NFL analyst for the NFL Network, and commonly appears on "Thursday Night Football."
