Beartooth Pass Ends Summer Skiing Unexpectedly Early—and More Ski news

North America's only summer-specific ski area closes early.

In a strange turn of events, Beartooth Basin, the summer-only ski area atop Idaho and Montana's Beartooth Pass, closed unexpectedly this week, capping a season that lasted less than a month. Normally open through the end of July, Beartooth reportedly lost more snow than expected over a short period of time, making lift operations and trail maintenance impossible and forcing the hand of the legendary community hill. Though Beartooth said it will reopen with a fresh coat of snow, it looks like lift-serviced summer skiing may be off the table in Big Sky Country. Big, honking bummer.

Ski jump champ says new suit caused a horrific crash.

Norwegian ski jumper and two-time World Cup Overall champion Halvor Egner Granerud suffered a scary crash during a training jump in Lillehammer, Norway, briefly going unconscious before being transported to a nearby hospital. It's a brutal crash, and one that Granerud said later was a direct effect of new FIS-implemented suits. The newer suits, which are tighter than previous iterations, have been part of a larger struggle within the sport, which has seen discrepancies in equipment and even high-profile disqualifications in the 2022 Beijing Games. Ultimately, Granerud said that, while frustrated, his ultimate goal for speaking up is to make the sport safer for everyone involved.

Mount Washington sees the snowiest June on record.

It's not all umbrella drinks and base tans out there, just ask the East Coast's tallest peak. New Hampshire's Mount Washington just recorded the snowiest June on record (note, we still have half the month left), logging almost nine inches of white stuff on its normally-thawed flanks. Sure, that might not seem like a lot compared to the continued onslaught in the Sierra, but remember that East Coast skiers can turn a dusting into the best day ever. Nine inches and counting? It's time to whip out the fat sticks, bud!

Meanwhile, at Alta...

If your ski legs are still under you, the getting is still pretty good up Little Cottonwood Canyon. Yeehaw, compadre.

FUNNY: U.S. Alpine racers try out freestyle water ramps

This video is either our best and brightest downhill skiers getting humbled on a water ramp, or live footage of me trying to survive the work week. Either way, it slaps.
