Bears' Chase Daniel throws pick-six on first pass after starting for Mitch Trubisky
The Chicago Bears entered Sunday hoping to get another acceptable performance from backup quarterback Chase Daniel after he defeated the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving. It took only two plays before Mitchell Trubisky’s replacement threw a pick-six and helplessly got run over by the New York Giants‘ defense.
New York’s Alec Ogletree didn’t even have to beat the pass block as Daniel tossed his first attempt of the game straight into the arms of the linebacker. Things got uglier as Ogletree practically dragged Daniel into the end zone with him as the Bears quickly found themselves in a 7-0 hole.
Daniel is making his second straight start for the injured Trubisky while Chicago’s QB1 nurses a shoulder injury that isn’t expected to sideline him long-term. Last Thursday, against a woebegone Detroit team, Daniel went 27-for-37 passing with 230 yards and two touchdowns in a 23-16 victory.
Chicago was hoping it could ride that momentum longer to give their top quarterback another week of rest against a New York team in the midst of a disaster of a season. It’s a fair — and safe — strategy by the Bears and rookie head coach Matt Nagy, but it definitely has its risks, as Daniel showed in the first minute of the game.
A victory on Sunday would push Chicago to 9-3 on the year and in prime position heading into the final games of the regular season. It knew it would have to overcome adversity to get there, yet it might not have expected to face that trouble so early in the game.
